Searches for a high-mass Higgs boson produced in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV
In this Thesis the electro-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking of the
Standard Model (SM) is studied by searching for the scalar Higgs particle
in the proton antiproton collisions of the Tevatron collider,
at the center of mass energy TeV.
We report on the inclusive search for the Higgs boson
%produced in all processes with significant production rate and
decaying to two bosons in the final state characterized by two charged leptons ( or ) and two neutrinos.
% in collisions at a center of mass energy TeV.
The analysis of 4.8\ifb of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF)
shows no evidence of its production. We set 95\% Confidence Level upper limits
on the production cross section as a function of the mass in the range
to 200\gev/c^2.
For m_H=165\gev/c^2 the observed limit is 1.3 times the SM predicted
cross section (); the expected limit, in absence of signal, is .
These limits are the most stringent ones set by a single experiment up to date, for m_H > 130\gev/c^2.In questa Tesi \`e studiato il meccanismo di rottura spontanea di simmetria

L'analisi effettuata su 4.8\ifb di dati raccolti dall'esperimento Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF)

Adulthood issues in idiopathic central precocious puberty
The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychological condition of young adults who had experienced idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP). Ten women aged 18.0 +/- 1.9 years who had previously been treated with GnRH agonists were studied 7 years after the conclusion of the treatment. The enrolled women participated in a group interview and completed standardized checklists; the Sexuality Evaluation Schedule Assessment Monitoring Relation and the Anxiety Scale Questionnaire were also completed. Adult age anxiety was normal even if it had been pathological at the onset of precocious puberty, whereas embarrassment was found in their sexual sphere as well as troubled relationships in either a single or couple situation; 80.0% of them had a negative body image compared to 40.0% of healthy controls. Only 10.0% of the women who had had ICPP studied had practiced masturbation compared to 100% in healthy controls. Of the ICPP patients, 80.0% were single, while 80.0% of healthy controls were involved in a relationship. In conclusion, our findings suggest that ICPP can lead to specific problems in the sexual sphere, and that families and patients need psychological support from the onset of ICPP
PORPHYRIA CUTANEA TARDA AND HEPATITIS C AND G VIRUSES INFECTIONS :STUDY IN A CENTER-SOUTH
Porphyria cutanea tarda and hepatitis C and G virus infections: Study in a Center-South Italy population.
Are ethnic minorities synonymous for genetic isolates? Comparing Walser and Romance populations in the Upper Lys Valley (Western Alps).
Cultural differences between neighbouring populations are often said to give rise to reproductive barriers. For ethnic minorities, these barriers can easily result in genetic isolation. In this study, we analyse the surname structure of the Walser of the upper Lys Valley, a German-speaking ethnic minority in the Italian Western Alps, to better understand the relationships between linguistic and genetic isolation. Analyses were based on 1713 marriages registered from 1838 to 1938 in four villages of the valley: three Walser communities (Issime, Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Gressoney-La-Trinité) and the Romance community of Gaby. The results show that endogamy and inbreeding are lower than in other Italian linguistic minorities, with the exception of Gaby, whose values rank among the highest ever found in Italy. Compared to the Walser communities' Gaby behaves as an outgroup and has an almost exclusively autochthonous surname set. The latter aspect is also true, but to a lesser extent, for the Walser villages, in particular for Issime on the one hand and Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Gressoney-La-Trinité on the other. These findings strongly suggest that the Walser communities' ethnic minority status is not associated with genetic isolation, whereas genetic isolation was found in the linguistically non-isolated Gaby. Finally, our results are consistent with two independent late medieval migration events at the origin of these Walser settlements
Asymptotic analysis for domains separated by a thin layer made of periodic vertical beams
We consider a thin heterogeneous layer consisted of the thin beams (of radius r) and we study the limit behaviour of this problem as the periodicity e, the thickness d and the radius r of the beams tend to zero. The decomposition of the displacement field in the beams developed in [Griso, Decompositions of displacements of thin structures, 2008] is used, which allows to obtain a priori estimates. Two types of the unfolding operators are introduced to deal with the different parts of the decomposition. In conclusion we obtain the limit problem together with the transmission conditions across the interface
Asymptotic analysis for periodic perforated shells
We consider a perforated half-cylindrical thin shell and investigate the limit behavior when the period and the thickness simultaneously go to zero. By using the decomposition of shell displacements presented in Griso [JMPA 89 (2008) 199–223] we obtain a priori estimates. With the unfolding and rescaling operator we transform the problem to a reference configuration. In the end this yields a homogenized limit problem for the shell
