No full textThis multilingual publication (Italian, Spanish, English) gathers together the texts presented during the homonymous international conference held at the Roma Tre Faculty of Architecture in Rome on the 12 and 13 November 2007, promoted and coordinated by Francesco Cellini, also the author of the first presentation, entitled “Le case Icp degli anni ’20 e ’30 a Roma: una tradizione di qualità” – “Iacp Public Housing from the 1920s and 30s in Rome: A Tradition of Quality”.
The texts, in addition to that that by prof Cellini, also include presentations made by the Italian professors and researchers Stefano Cordeschi, Paolo Desideri, Luca Montuori and Ranieri Valli, together with those by illustrious foreign experts on housing: Frits van Dongen, Dick van Gameren, Floor Arons and Arnoud Gelauff from The Netherlands, and Andrés Canova and José Mata from Spain. The book is completed by a published transcription of the closing debate.
The objective of the conference, strictly linked with the research into the theme of housing promoted by Francesco Cellini (see below, as well as the book: M. Farina (ed.), Studi sulla casa urbana: sperimentazioni e temi di progetto) was that of critically and directly reflecting on the rich quantity of research, studies and experiments related to this theme, offered by international contemporary architectural and professional culture.

Az első bevezető fejezetben röviden szóltam a reneszánszról mint művészeti stílusról, aztán megemlítettem Cellini néhány alkotását, kalandos életét, valamint írtam műve keletkezésének körülményeiről. Mivel Cellini önéletírása egy kora újkori emlékirat, ezért a második fejezetben a korszak önéletírásáról általános összefoglalást adtam. A harmadik fejezetben Cellini önéletírására koncentráltam. Megvizsgáltam az abban megjelenő főbb történelmi és sorsfordító eseményeket, Cellini személyiségét. Végül Cellini önéletírását műfaji és retorikai-stilisztikai szempontból elemeztem. No full textLa conoscenza, l’interpretazione delle tracce del nostro passato, la loro conservazione e infine la trasmissione di quel che ne abbiamo appreso (cioè, in senso alto, la divulgazione) sono attività imperative e inseparabili; non sono tuttavia, come tutte le cose umane, per nulla ‘pure’. Ogni acquisizione, quando anche si autodefinisca scientifica, è incerta, parziale, faziosa, egoistica e provvisoria; tanto più, quando il campo è quello dell’archeologia. Qui, in ogni caso, ci si trova costretti ad agire su materie ingombranti, lasciate da millenarie interazioni degli uomini coll’ambiente, e quindi a sporcarsi le mani: ogni scavo sacrifica qualcosa, ogni restauro altera in parte l’originalità, ogni ricostruzione o esposizione mistifica o inganna il visitatore ed anche, spesso, lo annoia. E poi le estesissime stratificazioni antiche, quelle giacenti nei sottosuoli o nel vivo dei tessuti edilizi urbani, non ammettono regole certe, tanto meno quelle, ormai rituali, che li vorrebbero far diventare musei o parchi turistici. Chiedono però di essere conosciute, di trovar senso nella percezione di tutti, e di essere appropriatamente usate: cioè re-inventate (rinvenute, riscoperte, rivissute) con sensibilità e rispetto e cura. Qualità poetiche, non soltanto scientifiche, anzi a-metodiche, non dogmatiche e ancora una volta ‘impure’, che appartengono al progetto di architettura, quando esso sia esercitato nella sua forma più seria e responsabile. No full textThis book offers a collection of essays by various authors (all members of the research group coordinated by Francesco Cellini) on the theme of medium to high-density urban dwellings. The objective is that of documenting and offering a critical reflection on the incredibly rich amount of research, studies and experiments on this theme being made by contemporary international architectural and professional culture, in relation to the almost total lack of any significant commitment to this sector in Italy. This particularly evident gap is reflected in the incapacity of Italian architecture (and the country’s institutions) to offer any follow-up, through a critical and operative evolution, to the highly successful experiences tested during the 1920s and 40s (for example the work of the Icp romano Public Housing Institute), and during the 1950s and 60s.
The introductory essay by Francesco Cellini (“Le ragioni di una ricerca” “The Reasons behind a Work of Research”) illustrates the general objectives of the research, the reasons behind the selection of the field of study and a synthesis of the results obtained.
The book is structured in two parts: the first concerns contemporary residential research in various international fields. The essays, accompanied by a rich selection of documents and images, with a particular focus on the analysis and technical legibility of architectural and typological solutions, examine the situation in The Netherlands (M. Farina, “Frammenti di paessaggio e sistemi di soglia: sequenze spaziali tra pubblico e privato” - “Fragments of Landscape and Systems of Threshold: Spatial Sequences between Public and Private”); a number of interesting experiments in Japan (S. Battaglia, “Housing ibrido” – “Hybrid Housing”); once again in Holland, though in terms of dwelling typologies (M. Farina, “Articolazione tipologica ed immagine dell’unità abitativa: la dimensione individuale dell’abitare” – “Typological Articulation and the Image of the Dwelling Unit: The Individual Dimension of Dwelling”); and, finally, a selection of particularly significant international examples of innovation (S. Ferazzoli, “Nuovi modi di abitare: lo spazio dell’alloggio” – “New Ways of Dwelling: The Space of the Unit”). The first part concludes with a collection of analytical sample charts, edited by M. Farina (for The Netherlands) and S. Ferazzoli (the EMVS experience in Madrid).
The second part of the book, which features an essay by G. De Pasquale and charts developed by the latter and J. Kuhnle, illustrates a number of Roman projects from the 1930s that, for many reasons, can still be considered exemplary.
