Article abstract: The status of baryon resonance electroproduction at high momentum transfer is presented in the overall context of exclusive reactions. Alternate theoretical descriptions, including constituent quarks, generalized parton distributions, and PQCD are discussed as momentum transfers vary from small (large λ) to large (small λ) values. The role of helicity and polarization asymmetries is considered. The Δ(1232) is discussed as a test case. The CC-NB-LRR-Type Rdg2a resistance gene confers immunity to the seed-borne barley leaf stripe pathogen in the absence of hypersensitive cell death
BACKGROUND: Leaf stripe disease on barley (Hordeum vulgare) is caused by the seed-transmitted hemi-biotrophic fungus Pyrenophora graminea. Race-specific resistance to leaf stripe is controlled by two known Rdg (Resistance to Drechslera graminea) genes: the H. spontaneum-derived Rdg1a and Rdg2a, identified in H. vulgare. The aim of the present work was to isolate the Rdg2a leaf stripe resistance gene, to characterize the Rdg2a locus organization and evolution and to elucidate the histological bases of Rdg2a-based leaf stripe resistance. PRINCIPLE FINDINGS: We describe here the positional cloning and functional characterization of the leaf stripe resistance gene Rdg2a. At the Rdg2a locus, three sequence-related coiled-coil, nucleotide-binding site, and leucine-rich repeat (CC-NB-LRR) encoding genes were identified. Sequence comparisons suggested that paralogs of this resistance locus evolved through recent gene duplication, and were subjected to frequent sequence exchange. Transformation of the leaf stripe susceptible cv. Golden Promise with two Rdg2a-candidates under the control of their native 5′ regulatory sequences identified a member of the CC-NB-LRR gene family that conferred resistance against the Dg2 leaf stripe isolate, against which the Rdg2a-gene is effective. Histological analysis demonstrated that Rdg2a-mediated leaf stripe resistance involves autofluorescing cells and prevents pathogen colonization in the embryos without any detectable hypersensitive cell death response, supporting a cell wall reinforcement-based resistance mechanism. CONCLUSIONS: This work reports about the cloning of a resistance gene effective against a seed borne disease. We observed that Rdg2a was subjected to diversifying selection which is consistent with a model in which the R gene co-evolves with a pathogen effector(s) gene. We propose that inducible responses giving rise to physical and chemical barriers to infection in the cell walls and intercellular spaces of the barley embryo tissues represent mechanisms by which the CC-NB-LRR-encoding Rdg2a gene mediates resistance to leaf stripe in the absence of hypersensitive cell death.Davide Bulgarelli, Chiara Biselli, Nicholas C. Acute Hypobaric-Hypoxia Challenge and Salivary Cortisol and DHEA-S in Healthy Male Subjects

Aviat Space Environ Med 2012; 83:637-42. Background: Hypobaric hypoxia is a stressful emergency situation that can cause a degradation of the sensory, motor, and higher cognitive functions necessary for safe flight. Methods: We studied the salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) concentrations of 12 healthy male military aviators (AV) exposed to an altitude-induced hypoxia challenge in a hypobaric chamber. A matched control group (C) of eight flight physiology instructors wearing oxygen masks during the challenge was studied. Salivary samples were collected every 2 h on 3 experimental days (the day before, the day of, and the clay after the hypobaric chamber challenge). Results: In the AV group, salivary cortisol concentrations showed a statistically significant increase from 5.42 +/- 0.15 measured at 08:30 to 11.37 +/- 1.86 ng ml(-1) during the hypobaric chamber challenge and a statistically significant increase in DHEA-S was also measured (from 3.15 +/- 0.42 ng . ml(-1) at 08:30 to 5.99 +/- 0.15 ng . ml(-1)). The day after the challenge, the concentrations of both hormones were comparable to those measured the day before; neither C nor AV showed any disturbances of the physiological diurnal fluctuations of cortisol and DHEA-S. No differences were found among the cortisol/DHEA-S ratios measured during the 3 experimental days in the AV group. Discussion: In spite of having experienced a psycho-physical stress, the AVs did not show any dysregulation of the diurnal fluctuations of cortisol and DHEA-S, thus presenting a good level of stress resilience. Data presented in this paper are consistent with recent literature suggesting a stress-buffering role of DHEA-S
The role of complement in anti-bacterial defence
The complement system consists of several proteins present in human serum interacting among themselves and with the other compounds of the immune system in the host defence process. In particular, late complement component (C5, C6, C7 and C8) deficiencies (LCCD) are closely associated with Neisseria, mainly meningitidis, infections. The aim of our study was to verify this association in an Italian population by analyzing the complement profile in survivors of meningococcal meningitis. Ten out of the 59 (17%) subjects studied had homozygous LCCD (6 C8, 3 C7 and 1 C6). The meningococcal C strain was the most widely diffused (68%) and had infected all homozygous LCCD subjects. In addition meningococcal serogroup C seemed to be the least immunogenic when compared to serogroups A and B. These data confirm the close association between homozygous LCCD and meningococcal infections from common serogroups (A, B and C) in the Italian population. Anti-meningococcal vaccination is usually recommended for LCCD subjects because it increases, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the antibody component of anti-meningococcal immune defence. We therefore analyzed the levels of anti-polysaccharide (PS) A and PSC antibodies in the members of 4 families including normal subjects and subjects with homozygous and heterozygous C7, C8 or factor H defects, before and after vaccination with only PSA+C. Surprisingly, we found the highest levels of antibodies before vaccination in homozygous subjects, followed by heterozygous and normal controls, whereas, after vaccination, homozygous subjects showed the lowest increase of specific antibodies, indicating their relative incapacity to respond to meningococcal PS alone. In conclusion, we suggest that anti-meningococcal vaccination be given to LCCD patients, but only after specific anti-PSA and PSC antibodies are monitored
