Neural Network Potentials: A Concise Overview of Methods
In the past two decades, machine learning potentials (MLPs) have reached a level of maturity that now enables applications to large-scale atomistic simulations of a wide range of systems in chemistry, physics, and materials science. Different machine learning algorithms have been used with great success in the construction of these MLPs. In this review, we discuss an important group of MLPs relying on artificial neural networks to establish a mapping from the atomic structure to the potential energy. In spite of this common feature, there are important conceptual differences among MLPs, which concern the dimensionality of the systems, the inclusion of long-range electrostatic interactions, global phenomena like nonlocal charge transfer, and the type of descriptor used to represent the atomic structure, which can be either predefined or learnable. A concise overview is given along with a discussion of the open challenges in the field. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, Volume 73 is April 2022. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates. In the past two decades, machine learning potentials (MLPs) have reached a level of maturity that now enables applications to large-scale atomistic simulations of a wide range of systems in chemistry, physics, and materials science. Optimal Vehicle-to-Grid Controller for Energy Arbitrage and Frequency Regulation Markets
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is a technology that is both beneficial for electric vehicle users and the sustainability of the world. Drivers plug their vehicles into the charging station and V2G technology provides bidirectional energy flow between the vehicle's battery and the grid. In this paper, V2G applications are implemented as optimization models that maximize the profit of the vehicle owner. There are two different applications to achieve the objective: energy arbitrage and frequency regulation. With these two methods combined along with a forecasting algorithm for electricity prices, the proposed model ensures profit maximization for the vehicle owner. MATLAB was used as the development environment along with YALMIP and CPLEX. To obtain realistic results, real-time electricity prices of Energy Exchange Istanbul (EXIST) are used throughout the study. The proposed model yields maximum profit and minimum cost

Tunable Optical Behavior of Infrared Filters With Phase Change Material
We propose an asymmetric to quasisymmetric behavioral tunability of a structured filter operating in the mid-infrared (IR) spectral region, where the atmospheric transparency is high. The structure is designed through electromagnetic wave analysis using finite-difference time-domain computations. The behavioral tunability provides dynamic control of the optical behavior of the IR filter without geometric and structural changes and opens up a field of research area in the tunable IR devices. It is shown that optical characteristic can be switched from an optical diode (unidirectional isolator or asymmetric light transmission) to the bidirectional isolator (quasisymmetric behavior) based on the phase transition of vanadium dioxide in the entire mid-IR spectrum. The proposed structure can be fabricated with the current nano and microfabrication techniques and can be utilized in smart front IR windows for protecting delicate sensors in the IR imaging systems and IR missile seekers under strong IR laser radiation
Long-term depression is a stroke risk factor
Kocer, Abdulkadir/0000-0003-2866-555XWOS: 000297410200005PubMed: 25380040Background and Aim: Only a few studies have evaluated depression prevalence in pre-stroke period in comparison to controls. We investigated this association based on a hospitalised stroke population. Methods: One hundred and forty-eight stroke patients were evaluated. The presence of depression was compared with those of 100 healthy controls without stroke, from the same region. Depression was accepted as present or not present after history and clinical evaluation according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV. Socio-demographic variables, other stroke risk factors and the time of diagnosis of depression (how many year or month they got depression) were recorded. Results: Gender and mean age of patients and controls were similar in comparison. Depression was diagnosed in 27 patients and 24 controls (p > 0.05). The time period passed after diagnosis of depression was longer in stroke patients in comparison to controls (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The risk of stroke should be considered in elderly with long-term depression. This indicates that treatment of depression is another factor which should be considered in prevention of brain stroke
Real-Time Hand Motion Recognition: A Robust Low-Cost Approach
This study presents a robust, low-cost hand motion recognition approach designed to run on low-end computer systems. Our method detects and tracks hand region using real-time images obtained from a low-resolution camera (i.e. webcam) and is not depended on any training or calibration and is not required any special camera apparatus or selectors. The proposed system involves several image processing techniques such as background subtraction, face detection, skin colour detection and template matching. The experimental results show promising performance under various conditions. The method has a wide range of applications where more natural ways of interaction required, such as virtual reality applications, assistive technologies and simulation
Polarization-insensitive beam splitters using all-dielectric phase gradient metasurfaces at visible wavelengths
Beam splitters play important roles in several optical applications, such as interferometers, spectroscopy, and optical communications. In this study, we propose and numerically examine polarization-insensitive beam splitters utilizing two-step phase gradient all-dielectric metasurfaces in the visible spectrum. The metasurface is made of periodically arranged binary unit cells, and phase difference between neighboring unit cells on the surface is 180 deg. The metasurface is shown to have a special phase gradient whose sign changes periodically. The angle of the split beams on both sides and the corresponding total transmission value at 532 nm wavelength are found to be +/- 46.8 degrees and 0.90, respectively.
