ABBA (on tour) the practice of process

    No full text
ABBA is the curatorial and artistic collective of Angela Bartram and Andrew Bracey, two artists engaged with the act of making and process with divergent outcomes. ABBA seeks to create a conversation of interrogative and inquisitive practice born of doing. The maker is saturated in the environment of exhibition and debate: the event is part residency, part production, part curatorial, part performance and part installation. This is live artistic research: talks, actions, artefacts, deliberations, provocations, ruminations, speculations, invention and creative assembly, process and production will be present. The artists were present in the gallery in the first week of the exhibition and everyone was welcome to come and engage with ABBA. The exhibition in turn acts as a dialogue between venues. As it moves to the next it will regroup, restage, and reproduce the process in respect of site and circumstance. This is the pilot for the tour of this exhibition, which aims to respond to the letters in the title – A, will be in a city beginning with A; B in a city begging with B; the final B and A in a city that has a backwards writing style. Like a band on tour and with a set list defined by the performers the show will naturally change, mutate and draw in other participants, but the core principle of making and process remains integral

Rock Concert Performance from ABBA to ZZ Top

    No full text
This book presents an analysis of 100 rock concert performances and attempts to answer the question "What makes a truly great rock performance?" Author Peter Smith, an experienced concert goer, delves into his own recollections of experiencing rock performances over the last 50+ years and, with the support of his daughter, Laura Smith, analyzes 100 selected performances covering the themes of icons, persona, energy, fandom, venues, communities, politics, art-rock, authenticity and maturity. The approach taken is based upon qualitative analysis, reflection, and autoethnography. The selected performances cover a range of diverse acts such as the Rolling Stones, ABBA, Sex Pistols, Barbara Streisand, David Bowie, and the like

The LES of the channel flow in a non aligned system of coordinates.

    No full text
The plane channel flow continues to be a very important test case for the verification and the validation of LES. In the channel flow test there is a privileged direction, usually one reference axis is oriented along the stream and the size of the computational box is increased in the streamwise direction in order to capture correctly the dominant turbulent structures and to produce a fully developed flow. All that is peculiar of this particular test, and in this paper we will investigate the sensitivity of the channel test to the particular alignment of the coordinate system with the mean flow. In a non aligned system of coordinates there is no privileged direction, there are two components of the forcing term, the mean pressure gradient, and the homogeneities of the Reynolds stresses are destroyed. In our paper we simulate the channel flow in a rotated system of coordinates, and we compare the results with the stream aligned data. We think that this test could evidence the flexibility of different LES codes and LES subgrid models to simulate the turbulent flow and to capture the correct statistical values in non aligned conditions. The first preliminary results are slightly contradictory: the resolved Reynolds stresses seem degraded while the mean flow is better predicted. The dynamic anisotropic subgrid model of Abba’, Cercignani and Valdettaro seems well fitted to represent correctly the large scales in non aligned conditions

The collection consists of 4 items relating to Abba Eban's career as one of Israel's foremost statesmen. Contains a pamphlet of a 1955 address delivered at University of Notre Dame entitled "Modern Israel," and a reprint of an essay on Jewish Heritage from the 1962 New Jewish Encyclopedia. Also contains two programs from events held in Eban's honor, one, a 1959 testimonial dinner upon Eban's return to Israel after 10 years in the United States while serving as Israel's representative to the United Nations and her Ambassador to the United States, which is autographed by Eban. The second is a program from a memorial lecture at the Monroe Temple of Liberal Judaism, NY, at which Eban was a guest speaker in 1987unknown, from WalthamDistinguished Israeli statesman, scholar and orator. ABBA ABBA (1977): Anthony Burgess e il mito di John Keats

    No full text
Parole chiave: Anthony Burgess, ABBA ABBA, John Keats, Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli, Ode a un usignolo, Ode su un’urna greca, sonetto, Roma ottocentescaAbstract: Published in 1977, Anthony Burgess’s ABBA ABBA focuses on the imaginary meeting between two emblematic nineteenth-century poets: John Keats and Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli. The novel reveals the author’s passion for Neoclassicism and Romanticism, testified by the many references to personalities such as Antonio Canova, Lord Byron and Paolina Bonaparte. By examining the narrative technique employed by Burgess in evoking the lucid desperation of the young English poet, the essay aims to investigate the ways in which the author managed to translate the last events of Keats’s biography into a compact and sparkling reconstruction of late Romanticism itself.Key words: Anthony Burgess, ABBA ABBA, John Keats, Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli, Ode to a Nightingale, Ode to a Grecian Urn, Sonnet, Nineteenth-century Rom

Dynamic tensorial eddy viscosity model: Effects of compressibility and of complex geometry

    No full text
A previous paper by Cimarelli et al. ["General formalism for a reduced description and modelling of momentum and energy transfer in turbulence,"J. Fluid Mech. 866, 865-896 (2019)] has shown that every decomposition of turbulent stresses is naturally approximated by a general form of tensorial eddy viscosity based on velocity increments. The generality of the formalism is such that it can also be used to give a reduced description of subgrid scalar fluxes. In the same work, this peculiar property of turbulent stresses and fluxes has been dynamically exploited to produce tensorial eddy viscosity models based on the second-order inertial properties of the grid element. The basic idea is that the anisotropic structure of the computational element directly impacts, although implicitly, the large resolved and small unresolved scale decomposition. In the present work, this new class of turbulence models is extended to compressible turbulence. A posteriori analysis of flow solutions in a compressible turbulent channel shows very promising results. The quality of the modeling approach is further assessed by addressing complex flow geometries, where the use of unstructured grids is demanded as in real world problems. Also in this case, a posteriori analysis of flow solutions in a periodic hill turbulent flow shows very good behavior. Overall, the generality of the formalism is found to allow for an accurate description of subgrid quantities in compressible conditions and in complex flows, independent of the discretization technique. Hence, we believe that the present class of turbulence closures is very promising for the applications typical of industry and geophysics
