Using Information Communication Technologies for Gender and *Development in Africa: A Case Study of UNIFEM and FEMNET
This dissertation argues that for ICTs to be used as a tool to empower women economically, socially and politically, there should be a bottom-up approach where poor, non-literate and rural women act as their own experts by actively using these new technologies in combination with the old (such as radios and videos) to address their own needs.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-28T15:00:59Z (GMT). Racializing white residues: seditious Anglo-Indians and others
My dissertation interrogates the discursive residues of the Anglo-Indian question in decolonized India. To problematize these residues, I structure my dissertation as a fragmented genealogy of colonial and post-colonial perceptions of Anglo-Indians. I open my dissertation by showing how, since the late-nineteenth century, Anglo-Indians were claimed to be only of part-European racial provenance, and tautologically had their bodies deemed sexually deviant. Their bodies being, like those of their non-Anglo-Indian counterparts, in fact of uncertain racial intermixture, I argue that Anglo-Indians inhabit mongrel bodies—bodies in a state of continual flux of class and race, inhabiting a multiplicity of pluralized communities. The ethical end of the decolonized Indian nation-state, I accordingly suggest, is to facilitate the recognition of mongrelism as an inevitable phenomenon across groups—one that fractures monolithic conceptions of race and community. To flesh out this argument, I conduct readings from an archive of novels, historiographic treatises, short stories, memoirs, films, and cartoons. The figures whose texts I examine include, among others, colonial Anglo-Indian ‘prostitute’ Amelia Horne, Anglo-Indian anti-racism activist Cedric Dover, Bengali novelist Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, diasporic English writer Aubrey Menen, Indian cartoonist Mario Miranda, Bengali film director Satyajit Ray, Anglo-Indian politician and historiographer Frank Anthony, and British-Indian writer Ruskin Bond.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-08-01The student, Debojoy Chanda, accepted the attached license on 2018-07-04 at 01:48.The student, Debojoy Chanda, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2018-07-04 at 02:33.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2018-07-06 at 10:04.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12728 on 2018-09-27 at 11:16:29Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-27T16:30:17Z (GMT). Between Islam and Feminism: New Political Transformations and Movements in Morocco
In short, this study identifies the various ways secular feminist groups have shaped the politics of protest of Islamist women and vice versa. This turn in the discussion is related to my definition of women as agents articulating competing definitions and agendas about key issues such as democracy, citizenship, women's rights and religion. Thus, this study is not a mere addition to the existing case studies on the women's movement in the Middle East. It is rather an innovative approach that challenges the static view, based on the opposition between feminism and Islamism, with a more dynamic view that looks at interdependencies, relationships and exchanges between these movements. Furthermore, by locating these dynamics in the changing historical conjunctures of the 1980s to 2003, my study also identifies the interpenetrations among these movements and their environments---state, political parties, law, and media.Made available in DSpace on 2015-09-28T15:00:55Z (GMT). Design of a combined horizontal and U slot patch antenna with reduced cross-polarization and increased sustainability
This paper presents a rectangular microstrip patch antenna designed to operate at a frequency of 2.6348 GHz. The antenna is equipped with a U-slot and horizontal slot to mitigate cross-polarization effectively. By strategically placing the U-slot on the radiating patch and incorporating a horizontal slot on the patch, the antenna achieves enhanced radiation characteristics. It demonstrates excellent impedance matching with a VSWR of 1.02, indicating minimal signal reflection (S11 of -27.47dB) and improved transmission efficiency with a gain of 7.11dBi. The proposed design offers reduced cross-polarization characteristics and increased sustainability with compact size, making it suitable for WLAN applications prioritizing reliable and efficient communication
Characterisation of a putative quorum sensing system in Colstridium difficile
Clostridium difficile is the major cause of health-care associated infections. However the factors that participate in C. difficile infection and the processes that regulate their expression remains poorly understood. In Staphylococcus aureus, quorum sensing (QS) plays a central role in the regulation of virulence factors. The QS system of S. aureus is encoded by the accessory gene regulator (agr) locus and comprises of four genes. The pre-peptide (AgrD) is processed by AgrB and the mature auto-inducing peptide (AIP) is released into the medium. Free AIP binds to the histidine-sensor kinase AgrC, causing it to autophosphorylate. In turn, AgrC phosphorylates the response regulator AgrA, triggering an intracellular signal-transduction cascade which results in altered expression of several target genes. Homologues of genes involved in QS have been identified in the genome sequence of C. difficile 630, a virulent multidrug resistant strain. These homologues have also been identified in C. difficile R20291, a ribotype 027 epidemic strain, which has been characterised to produce increased quantities of Toxin A and Toxin B. C. difficile R20291 has two agr loci, whereas C. difficile 630 only has one agr locus. The first agr locus present in both strains contains agrBD homologues, although there are no apparent agrAlagrC homologues. However, the second agr locus in C. difficile R20291 contains homologues of all four agr genes. Insertional inactivation of the QS homologues were made in the two C. difficile strains and the effects on virulence assessed. Cytotoxicity assays indicated that there is a substantial reduction in toxin B production in C. difficile R20291 strains deficient in the second agr system compared to the wild-type strain. Sporulation assays revealed that the onset of sporulation in the agr mutants vary greatly in comparison to the parental strain. The work presented in this study suggests that the agr system may be involved in toxin production and sporulation in C. difficile.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

A Brief Review on Changes in Air Pollution Scenario over South Asia during COVID-19 Lockdown
Abstract In general, the lockdown to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a better quality of air across the world. The concentrations of both particulate and majority of gaseous pollutants were decreased drastically due to total shutdown of outdoor activities in the initial phase. This has resulted in up to 50% reduction in the air quality index (AQI) over South Asian megacities. A significant reduction was observed over most polluted ranked cities in South Asia like Delhi (41%), Dhaka (16%), Kathmandu (32%), Colombo (33%) including Islamabad and Kabul. A major decrease was also observed in the gaseous pollutants like CO, NO2, and SO2. The strict lockdown provided an opportunity to the relevant authorities to reassess the large-scale transport and industrial sectors to avoid undue emissions of harmful pollutants. The present analysis suggests that there is a need of controlled emissions of air pollutants with reference to the lockdown values of ‘New Normal’, and to switch over to the cleaner fuel technology options at the earliest possible. There is a need to constitute an Inter-state agency to monitor trans-boundary and long-range transport of pollution across south Asia. Finally, a holistic approach for maintaining balance between ‘need and greed’ for energy and resource consumption is needed which can provide us the sustainable atmosphere and healthy air quality throughout the region
Mechanisms of calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxicity in chronic allograft injury
The first successful transplantation of a human kidney was performed more than 50 years ago by Murray and colleagues in 1954 between identical twins. The success of this transplantation was due to the fact that no significant rejection occurs between genetically identical twins and therefore immunosuppression was not necessary in this particular case (Merrill et al., 1956).
However, solid-organ transplantation could not be considered truly successful until the 1970’s after significant technical and pharmacological advances. In particular, the discovery and development of the calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) has made allograft transplantation routinely successful with greatly reduced risk of acute rejection. In the absence of pharmacological agents to address the primary pathological mechanisms involved, renal transplantation has now been the standard management of end stage renal failure for the past four decades (Wolfe
et al., 1999). Short-term renal allograft and allograft recipient survival rates have increased significantly during the last decade largely due to improved patient monitoring. However, allograft half-life beyond 1 year post-transplant remains largely unchanged. While rates of early allograft failure have significantly reduced, late renal allograft dysfunction remains a significant problem in the transplant population (de Fijter). Chronic allograft injury (CAI) is the most prevalent cause of allograft dysfunction in the first decade after transplantation. The term CAI is used to describe deterioration of renal allograft function and structure due to
immunological processes (i.e. chronic rejection) and/or a range of simultaneous nonimmunological factors such as CNI-induced nephrotoxicity, hypertension and infection. This chapter will outline the pathophysiology and etiology of CAI and the role that CNI nephrotoxicity plays in this disease process. It will also review experimental studies that have identified important molecular mechanisms involved and discuss strategies utilised to minimise the development and progression of CAI.Science Foundation IrelandHigher Education AuthorityIrish Research Council for Science, Engineering and TechnologyEuropean Research CouncilHealth Research BoardEnterprise Irelandti, ke, ab, de - TS 29.03.1
