Low strain rate compression measurements of PBX 9501, PBXN-9, and MOCK 9501
Low strain rate (10{sup -3} to 10{sup -1} 1/s) compression measurements have been obtained on three different composite materials: PBX 9501, PBXN-9, and a sugar mock of PBX 9501. These measurements expand on earlier efforts to identify the behavior of PBX 9501 and sugar mocks at different rates, aspect ratios (L/d) and temperatures. PBX 9501 samples at three different L/d`s were strained at the same rate to evaluate Lid effects on the stress strain parameters. Extensometer and strain gage data obtained with these measurements were also compared for precision. PBXN-9 data were obtained at two different L/ds, two different temperatures, and at three different rates. The PBXN-9 data exhibit similar trends to other energetic materials data, i.e. 1) increased ultimate compressive strength and modulus of elasticity with either an increase in strain rate, or decrease in temperature, and 2) small changes in the strain at maximum stress with changes in temperature or strain rate. A comparison of the PBXN-9 data to the PBX 9501 data shows that both begin to fail at comparable strains, however the PBXN- 9 data is considerably weaker in terms of the ultimate compressive strength

Deflagration Behavior of PBX 9501 at Elevated Temperature and Pressure
We report the deflagration behavior of PBX 9501 at pressures up to 300 MPa and temperatures of 150-180 C where the sample has been held at the test temperature for several hours before ignition. The purpose is to determine the effect on the deflagration behavior of material damage caused by prolonged exposure to high temperature. This conditioning is similar to that experienced by an explosive while it being heated to eventual explosion. The results are made more complicated by the presence of a significant thermal gradient along the sample during the temperature ramp and soak. Three major conclusions are: the presence of nitroplasticizer makes PBX 9501 more thermally sensitive than LX-04 with an inert Viton binder; the deflagration behavior of PBX 9501 is more extreme and more inconsistent than that of LX-04; and something in PBX 9501 causes thermal damage to 'heal' as the deflagration proceeds, resulting in a decelerating deflagration front as it travels along the sample

Plane impact response of PBX 9501 below 2 GPA
The plane impact response of PBX 9501 was measured below 2 GPa using a light-gas gun facility. Time-resolved wave profiles were obtained in a state of uniaxial strain for impact stresses between 0.3 to 1.2 GPa. Measurement of the stress/strain response of energetic materials as a function of strain rate and temperature: PBX 9501 and Mock 9501
We have measured the stress/strain behavior of PBX 9501, Mock 900-21 and two new mocks consisting of monoclinic granular sugar embedded in (1) a BDNPA-F/estane binder (a 9501 material mock; a hard organic crystal embedded in a plastic) and (2) neat estane (an LX-14 mock) at strain rates from 10{sup -3} to 10{sup -1}, at two L/D`s and at two temperatures (25 and 60 C). We find that the compressive strength falls with increasing temperature and rises with increasing strain rate. We also find that the new 9501 sugar mock most closely resembles the behavior of the 9501 explosive and differences may be attributable to the different ages of the estane binder used

Influence of temperature on the high-strain-rate mechanical behavior of PBX 9501
High-strain-rate (2000 s{sup -1}) compression measurements utilizing a specially-designed Split-Hopkinson-Pressure Bar have been obtained as a function of temperature from -55 to +50{degree}C for the plastic-bonded explosive PBX 9501. The PBX 9501 high-strain-rate data was found to exhibit similarities to other energetic, propellant, and polymer-composite materials as a function of strain rate and temperature. The high-rate response of the energetic was found to exhibit increased ultimate compressive fracture strength and elastic loading modulus with decreasing temperature. PBX 9501 exhibited nearly invariant fracture strains of {approximately}1.5 percent as a function of temperature at high-strain rate. The maximum compressive strength of PBX 9501 was measured to increase from {approximately}55 MPa at 50{degree}C to 150 MPa at -55{degree}C. Scanning electron microscopic observations of the fracture mode of PBX 9501 deformed at high-strain revealed transgranular cleavage fracture of the HMX crystals

Stabilizers in PBX 9501
An analysis of the analytical data from initial acceptance of PBX 9501 at Pantex and the current analysis of the library samples of the same lots show that the amount of Irganox has reduced linearly with time in the library samples. Data from the cycle reports show no negative trend in a sealed inert atmosphere. We also found that the stockpile return samples show very little change, both by thermal analysis with the ARC and chemical analysis by NMR, and can be said to be aging gracefully
