Pleistocene planktonic foraminifera at ODP Site 128-798
ODP Site 798 on the Oki Ridge in the Southern Japan Sea yielded the first continuous and well-preserved record of Pleistocene planktonic foraminifers in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean region. Quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminifers completed for 122 samples from the 200-m-thick Pleistocene section cored at ODP Site 798 provides a proxy record of variations in sea-surface temperature, productivity, and circulation during the past 1.6 m.y. in an area beneath the track of the Tsushima Current. Faunal census data allow recognition of five distinct assemblages: (1) type A assemblages dominated by sinistrally coiling forms of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma representing polar-subpolar surface temperatures, (2) type B assemblages dominated by Globigerina bulloides and thought to represent periods of increased surface productivity and upwelling, (3) type C assemblages marked by significant abundances of dextrally coiling forms of N. pachyderma thought to represent the warm transitional waters of the Tsushima Current, (4) type D assemblages distinguished by relatively high percentages of dextral N. pachyderma and Globorotalia inflata that also represent warmer surface temperatures and increased flow of the Tsushima Current, and (5) type E assemblages marked by relatively large numbers of the delicate species Globigerina quinqueloba and Globigerinita spp., indicative of exceptional preservation conditions and/or episodic high production of these taxa.
Early and middle Pleistocene coiling patterns of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma at Site 798 can be correlated with Pleistocene coiling trends and planktonic foraminiferal datums established in the onshore Oga Peninsula sequence of Northern Honshu and open-ocean N. pachyderma coiling dominance shifts in the North Pacific region. A sustained early Pleistocene warm period recognized in both the Oga Peninsula sequence and the Northern Pacific can clearly be recognized at Site 798. In addition, the late Pleistocene planktonic foraminiferal record at Site 798 shows good correlation with glaciation/deglaciation events for the Northern Hemisphere as delineated by oxygen isotopes and represents the first detailed analysis of Pleistocene sea-surface temperature changes in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean region
Composition of organic carbon at ODP Site 128-798
Organic geochemical and sedimentological investigations have been performed on sediments from ODP Sites 798 and 799 in order to reconstruct the depositional environment in the Japan Sea through late Cenozoic times. The Miocene to Quaternary sediments from Site 798 (Oki Ridge) and Site 799 (Kita-Yamato Trough) are characterized by high organic carbon contents of up to 6%. The organic matter is mainly a mixture of marine and terrigenous material. The dominant factors controlling marine organic carbon enrichment in the sediments of Hole 798A are probably an increased surface-water productivity and/or an increased preservation rate of organic carbon under anoxic deep-water conditions. In lower Pliocene sediments at Site 798 and Miocene to Quaternary sediments at Site 799, rapid burial of organic matter in turbidites may have been important, too. Remarkable cycles of dark, laminated sediments distinctly enriched in (marine) organic carbon by up to 5% and light, bioturbated to homogeneous sediments with reduced organic carbon contents indicate dramatic short-term paleoenvironmental variation

Results of preliminary pollen analyses of 280 samples from selected intervals of cores from Hole 798 on the Oki Ridge in the Sea of Japan (Sections 798A-1H-1 through 798A-3H-3,798B-1H, 798B-13H-1 through 798B-15H-8, and 798C-1H-1 through 798C-1H-3) indicate that (1) diagnostic pollen types of the vegetation of Japan are abundant and well-preserved in sediments deposited over the last 1.4 m.y.; (2) the concentration, preservation, and composition of pollen in the rapidly deposited sediments of Site 798 provide a basis for high-resolution (on the order of ~500-year intervals) pollen stratigraphy in Pliocene-Pleistocene Japan Sea sediments; (3) the pollen stratigraphy of sediments from Site 798 can be directly correlated with pollen stratigraphies of correlative ages onshore; and (4) the development of continuous, directly correlative Pliocene-Pleistocene terrestrial/marine paleoclimatic records from sediments deposited at Site 798 will provide a continuous high-resolution record of northeast Asian marine and terrestrial paleoenvironmental changes for the past ~2.4 Ma

“At Beijing’s 798 art district, I photograph a visitor, who inspects his own photos, while an artwork inspects him. 798 has become a destination for young Chinese to kill time, and shop, in one of the city’s more counter-culture environments.”

BEIJING 798
798 ribadisce l'aforisma di Mies "less is more" = minimo è sostenibile
Composition and accumulation rates of eolian sediments in ODP Site 128-798
Preliminary bulk and clay mineralogy data as determined by XRD as well as accumulation rates of quartz and feldspar at Oki Ridge Site 798 give important information about the paleoclimate in Asia and transport mechanisms of the siliciclastic sediment fraction. The (?uppermost Miocene/) lowermost Pliocene sediments at ODP Site 798 are characterized by high amounts of feldspars, smectites, and additionally abundant sand-sized terrigenous components. This is taken as an indication for turbiditycurrent-influenced deposition and a source area of the material different from that of the upper Pliocene/Pleistocene sediments. A distinct increase in accumulation rates for quartz and feldspar occurs near the Gauss/Matuyama boundary. We attribute this prominent shift to higher eolian sediment supply, caused by the increased aridification of Asia, which was probably triggered by the development of major Northern Hemisphere glaciation near 2.5 Ma. The late Pliocene/Pleistocene interval is characterized by short-term "Milankovitch-type" cyclic changes in terrigenous sediment composition most probably reflecting glacial/interglacial arid/humid climate cycles
798: Protest Subculture and Creative Industry
The Beijing 798 Art District in China has evolved from oppressed subculture to commercial entity. The argument has now been raised over the nature of the 798 artist community in today’s art world. The 798 originated as a subculture of avant-garde artists and now functions as a creative industry. The 798 is depicted by scholars as either a persecuted protest culture or a commodified and marketed Chinese identity. I gathered my research from sources on 798 evolution such as Jeroen de Kloet's article Social Semiotics, and Chinese scholars that study the 798's development in terms of China's communist past, most influentially Rey Chow. As a result of my research I discovered the identity of the 798 is a fusion of both commercial and protest. The current role of the 798 is complex, but is unraveled through comparison of past and present 798 works. From the evaluation of these works and their role, one thing becomes evident; that the 798 no longer functions as a subculture. The larger implications of this project lead to a questioning of the nature of a subculture, the definition of an artist community, and the role of the artist in oppressive cultures.Art and Desig
