    The oldest sediments cored at Site 605 are upper Maestrichtian argillaceous limestone (Hole 605, Subunit VB). The terrigeneous silt content of the uppermost Maestrichtian is quite low, averaging about 3%, whereas the carbonate content is high, usually greater than 60%; the silt contains only traces of glauconite (Site 605 chapter, this volume). Within Subunit VB a K/T boundary was defined by planktonic foraminifers. It was expected to be spread over an extended vertical interval because of the continental margin depositional setting. Examination by the shipboard party showed that the K/T boundary occurs in Section 605-66-1, between 70 and 75 cm. At the contact, the foraminiferal Globigerina pseudobulloides Zone (PIc) and the Coccolith Cruciplacolithus primus Subzone (CPla) overlie, respectively, the Abathomphalus mayaroensis and Nephrolithus frequens zones (Site 605). However, the thin K/T boundary clay, which is always present in complete sections, was not found, indicating either that the K/T boundary clay was not present or, more likely, that it was washed away during the coring operation

    This paper describes and illustrates early to middle Eocene benthic foraminifers from northwest Atlantic Site 605, on the continental rise off New Jersey. Benthic foraminiferal faunas are dominated by Bulitnina spp., Nuttallides truempyi, Lenticulina spp., and Cibicidoides spp. Other common taxa include Oridorsalis spp., Gyroidinoides spp., uniserial taxa, arenaceous taxa, and Globocassidulina subglobosa. Together, these taxa usually make up 70% or more of the total fauna. The assemblages are interpreted as indicating a lower bathyal environment of deposition during the Eocene at Site 605. This is corroborated by an independent water depth estimate through backstripping, indicating a water depth for the beginning of the Eocene to late middle Eocene of approximately 2300 to 2000 m

    Biostratigraphy of benthic and planktonic foraminifera in Paleocene samples of DSDP HOle 93-605

    Paleocene benthic and planktonic foraminifers occur throughout a long interval of the sedimentary succession cored at Site 605. A biostratigraphic zonation based on planktonic foraminifers is proposed for this Paleocene section. Zones identified are Subbotina pseudobulloides Zone, Morozovella trinidadensis Zone, M. uncinata Zone, M. pusilla pusilla Zone, Planorotalites pseudomenardii Zone, and M. velascoensis Zone. Fluctuations in the sedimentation rate occurred at Site 605. Rates of deposition were high during the M. pusilla pusilla and P. pseudomenardii zones, and a depositional hiatus may occur at the base of the M. velascoensis Zone. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of benthic foraminiferal assemblages suggests that the Paleocene sediments of Site 605 were deposited near the upper limit of Nuttallides truempyi, that is, approximately in the middle bathyal zone (600 m or more)
