    Diverse and abundant late Miocene to Pleistocene silicoflagellates at DSDP Site 504 can be correlated by tropical biostratigraphic zones and relative paleotemperature values to eastern tropical Pacific reference site DSDP 503A farther to the west. Early Pliocene assemblages, which were poorly known until now, are present and can be correlated locally between DSDP Holes 504, 503A, and 495, using species events associated with the new Dictyocha pulchella Subzone and Dictyocha angulata Subzone. Silicoflagellate relative paleotemperature values show major warming at 4.7 to 5.0 Ma (Cores 45-48), 3.4 to 3.8 Ma (Cores 32-33), 1.5 to 1.7 Ma (Cores 12-16), and 0.5 to 0.8 Ma (Cores 3-6). Major coolings occurred at 5.0 to 5.1 Ma (Core 51), 3.9 to 4.4 Ma (Cores 38-44), and 1.0 to 1.3 Ma (Cores 8-10). The appearance of Dictyocha longa is proposed to replace the asperoid/fibuloid ratio reversal as the bottom of the Dictyocha fibula Zone, because the non-evolutionary ratio reverses several times in the upper Miocene of Hole 503A, and at least once in Hole 504. Three new Pliocene silicoflagellates are defined: Dictyocha concinna Bukry, n. sp., D. helix Bukry, n. sp., and D. tamarae Bukry, n. sp

    XMM-Newton detection of a Comptonized accretion disc in the quasar PKS 0558-504

    We present XMM-Newton observations of the bright quasar PKS 0558-504. The 0.2-10 keV spectrum is dominated by a large, variable soft X-ray excess. The fastest flux variations imply accretion onto a Kerr black hole. The XMM-Newton data suggest the presence of a "big blue bump"in PKS 0558-504 extending from the optical band to ~3 keV. The soft X-ray spectrum shows no evidence for significant absorption or emission-line features. The most likely explanation for the hot big blue bump is Comptonization by the multi-temperature corona of a thermal accretion disc running at a high accretion rate

    Modifications and accommodations Medford Middle School teachers make for students demonstrating behaviors of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder

    Plan BThis study involves Medford Middle School teachers identifying the modifications and/or accommodations they make for children that demonstrate Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) type behaviors in the classroom setting. The teachers surveyed encompass all subjects including the Related Arts classes of band, chorus, physical education, art and family and consumer education. The six behaviors identified in the survey were taken from the DSM IV criteria for diagnosing AD/HD in children. Part one of each question was the identified behavior and how the teacher accommodated it. Part two of the behavioral question was a continuum of the level of tolerance the teacher has for each specific behavior. The continuum range from “Little Tolerance” (1) to “Some Tolerance” (3) to “Much Tolerance” (5). In addition to the six behavioral questions, the teachers were asked to respond as to what their definition of a AD/HD 4 504 Plan is and their willingness to make modifications/accommodations for a student that demonstrates AD/HD like behaviors, but does not have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The findings of this research describe how Medford Middle School teachers utilize at least six to 20 strategies or accommodations in order to help students succeed in school. Twelve percent of teachers demonstrated knowledge of what a 504 Plan is. The last question surveyed their willingness to make modifications or accommodations without an IEP or 504 Plan directing them. The average responses by grade ranged from 2.6 (slightly less than “somewhat likely” to modify or accommodate) in eighth grade to 3.5 (slightly higher than “somewhat likely” to modify or accommodate) in fifth grade.     The recovery of continuous sedimentary sequences has been and is a high-priority goal of the Ocean Drilling Program, yet its success has not been determined. We test the stratigraphic continuity of continuously cored sequences from ODP Leg 111 Holes 677A and 677B and DSDP Leg 69 Hole 504. The two holes at Site 677 and Hole 504 are correlated using high-resolution biostratigraphy, tephra stratigraphy, and time series of opaline silica and calcium carbonate. The correlation coefficient between the time series is maximized through an inverse correlation procedure. Changes in slope of the mapping function that relates the two sections indicate gaps or changes in the accumulation rate between sections. We assume as a first approximation that the sedimentary sequences are identical in each hole, given their close proximity. Slope changes of the mapping functions therefore result from errors introduced by coring. This assumption is justified by the fact that most mapping function slope changes occur at core breaks. Having identified missing sections in one site, it is possible to fill these gaps with the appropriate section from the adjacent site, thereby improving continuity. This is possible only where the sediment gaps identified at core breaks in one hole do not correspond to core break levels in the other hole. Results show that in the upper 100 m of the stratigraphic column, 3.1% and 4.6% were unsampled in Holes 677A and 677B, respectively, and 15% of the Pliocene portion of Hole 504 was not sampled by the hydraulic piston corer. This indicates that even in relatively calm seas, double or triple coring is required in order to ensure that gaps and doubly sampled intervals of the stratigraphic column which occur at core breaks are recognized and sampled at least once
