Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textThe variety of land uses and rapidity of development, combined with the area's basic physical characteristics, have led to a number of water-related problems -- including flooding, erosion and sedimentation, contamination of surface and ground waters, and eutrophication of lakes. The Lower Raritan/Middlesex 208 Study is organized in ten tasks to determine the relationship between human activities and water quality and to project water quality conditions in 1980, 1985, 1990 and 2000; to formulate plans and strategies to solve present and future water quality problems; to select and implement a plan; and to establish an ongoing water quality planning program.
The objective of Task 6 of the Lower Raritan/Middlesex 208 Study is to provide estimates of the non-point source pollutant loads from watersheds within the 208 study area, under existing and future land use conditions. These estimates will be used in other tasks to define water quality problems and to assess water quality management strategies. Task 6 consists of three basic subtasks: a) estimate runoff quantity, b) estimate pollution loads excluding sediment, and c) estimate quantities of erosion and sedimentation.
The objectives of this Task 6 Interim Report are to summarize the results of the work efforts to date, presenting preliminary results where possible, and to comment on the work remaining to complete the task. This report is structured to first address the basic methodology of analysis and then cover the work completed to date for the three subtasks.
