Sterling in crisis: 1964-1967
Get PDFWe provide the first econometric study of foreign exchange market intervention for the UK during the sterling crises from 1964-1967. We use daily data on spot and forward dollar/sterling exchange rates and reserve movements which allows a more precise description of the loss of credibility during four currency crises. Reserve losses are consistent with exchange rate crises. External assistance given to sterling throughout this period shored up the reserves and allowed the sterling peg to be maintained.

Diary has preprinted dates, informational matter at the front and color maps.Small pocket diary used by Van Deusen while leading the 7th Archbold Expedition to New Guinea. Entries are brief and include the location and his general activities, with some collecting results. Book has preprinted dated pages, Van Deusen's diary entries begin February 21 and end December 11. Spans his time in New York before the expedition, the journeys to and from Papua and the expedition period. Locations and campsites of note include Brisbane, Port Moresby, Lae, Pindiu, Masba Creek, Gang Creek, Ulur, Finschhafen, and Goodenough Island. Many entries only list the location of the expedition for that date. Volume also contains altitude readings from mountain climbs, names and addresses, some roughly sketched maps and notes on the local dialect. Hobart M. Van Deusen was a mammalogist and Assistant Curator of the Archbold Collections in the American Museum of Natural History Department of Mammalogy. He participated in the Cape York Expedition as well as three of the Archbold New Guinea Expeditions, leading the seventh in 1964.CLI

Caption accompanying the photograph: "The Blue Bird -- Lake Eyre South 1964 - Donald Campbell's attempt on the world land speed record in a vehicle through the wheels (not jet propelled), dragged on for almost two years during the winters of 1963 and 1964. Fluctuating dampness of the dry saltpan that is Lake Eyre was a major problem, making it difficult to maintain a perfectly smooth, hard dry surface for the many necessary practice runs and the final attempt. Sponsors grew impatient with the endless delays and withdrew support. New sponsors had to be found. Campbell's unpredictable temperament was a factor in splitting the large support group of sponsors, technicians, caterers, time-keepers etc. (some 60 or more people) into two camps"."Eventually, in the late winter of 1964, the 4,500 horse-power jet engined Bluebird attained a new world land speed record of 403 miles per hour (an average) of its top speeds on two immediately consequetive [sic] runs, north and south). NB: Craig Breedlove, driving a jet-propelled vehicle on a salt lake in the USA, achieved a considerably higher speed circa 1964. His vehicle was NOT driven through the wheels.
