Upon Daedalian Wings of Paper Money: Adam Smith and the Crisis of 1772
Get PDFAdam Smith advocated laissez faire for most sectors of the economy, but he believed that banking and finance required several forms of regulation including usury laws and the prohibition of small-denomination bank notes. Smith’s support for banking regulation appears to have been a response to the shocks that hit the Scottish banking system during the time that he was composing the Wealth of Nations. The most important was the Crisis of 1772, which has been described as the first modern banking crisis faced by the Bank of England. It resembles the Crisis of 2008 in a number of striking ways. This paper describes the Crisis of 1772, the other shocks that hit the Scottish banking system, and the evolution of Smith’s views on the regulation of banking. It is based on Smith’s writings, the secondary sources, and a quantification of the new issues of Scottish bank notes during Smith’s era.

Costa sombreada y a la aguada en grisMapa manuscrito realizado por Jacinto Abella Fuertes, correspondiente de la Real Academia de la Historia y copiado por Francisco Cossío. En la cartela de la mención de responsabilidad figura Juan, pero se trata de un error del copista, que escribió este nombre en lugar de Jacinto. En efecto, Jacinto Abella Fuertes fue elegido académico correspondiente, a propuesta del director Campomanes, el 3 de abril de 1772, el mismo año que levantó el mapa. El 20 de diciembre firmaba en Llamas de Canero (Luarca), su pueblo natal, la oración gratulatoria y el juramento de su nombramiento. En la Enciclopedia Asturiana, t. I, p. 8, se le dedican nueve líneas. Allí dice que "hizo un mapa completo de Asturias, por orden del Consejo de Castilla, y obtuvo el título de académico de la Historia en 1761" (sic). Fue regidor perpetuo de Luarca y falleció en 1808. Sin duda, ese mapa es el original manuscrito, del que se conserva una copia en el Atlas de la Academia. Fue entregado a esta corporación por el director Campomanes en la junta de 17 de julio de 1772 para los trabajos del Diccionario Geográfico, según consta en el manuscrito de los "Acuerdos relativos al Diccionario Geográfico" (f. 116v). En esa junta "se acordó se satisfaga su trabajo al que le ha copiado". En la de 14 de agosto, como Francisco Cosío -el copista- no había puesto precio, se decidió darle 300 reales por su trabajo. Seguramente este personaje sea el mismo que copió para la Academia, por encargo de Campomanes, el mapa de las islas Falkland, en el que firma: "Francisco Antonio de Cossio" (Sign. C-Atlas A, 32)Manuscrito dibujado a plumilla en tinta de bugalla, iluminado a la aguada en gris. Realizado en tres hojas de papel verjurado pegadas.
Restaurado en 1999En el ángulo superior derecho título y dedicatoria en cartela rectangular con marco moldurado y en su remate el escudo del Principado con Corona Real, guirnalda, banderas y otras armas.

Of Textual Bodies and Actual Bodies: the Abjection of Performance in Lessing's Dramaturgy
Get PDFProceeding from the observation that Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's famous Hamburgische Dramaturgie (Hamburg Dramaturgy) soon abandons the analysis of actual performances in favour of a discussion of character, the article explores Lessing's problematic relationship with the performing body, situating it in the context of an increasingly textual culture. It shows the implications of this move in terms of gender prescriptions before discussing Lessing's ‘disgust’ with a particular performance of his Emilia Galotti. Reading this example with Lessing's treatise Laokoon and drawing on Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection, it argues that Lessing's struggle with the performers reveals a profound crisis in subject formation in the sense that the disturbing corporality of the performing body is always threatening sympathetic identification. The article concludes that the Dramaturgie itself constitutes an ‘abjection’ of performance. A postscript opens up the view onto the contemporary relevance and refiguration of Lessing's Laokoon in the Laokoon Festival in Hamburg
