The manuscript covers 4 1/2 years (1651 to end of June 1655) with daily entries. Each entry begins with meteorological observations, followed by news related to the Vatican, then important international and domestic news, ending with notes about festivals, marriages, births, deaths or illnesses of prominent persons, and mentions of public punishments, robberies, assaults, homicides, and random accidents or injuries. Some days have only meteorogical information, followed by blank spaces, perhaps to allow last minute additions. From 1652 on, short marginal titles are used for the important pieces of news, which are often extensive and rich in details. The diary stops at the end of June 1655, soon after the election of the new Pope Alexander VII.Binding: old parchment over pasteboard; title on spine in brown ink, and two labels with the Phillipps inventory number. Bookplate of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guildford, centered on the front pastedown; ex libris stamp of the Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali on the title page of the 1654 diary - wrongly bound at the beginning of the volume, followed by 1655, then 1651, 1652 and 1653.The diary was written on 20-leaf fascicles, mostly in brown ink. The leaves are written on both sides. Those of the year 1651 are numbered from 416 to 492, continuing the pagination of the first volume, presumably containing the previous 5 years. The pagination of each of the following years starts from 1: 118 leaves in 1652, 75 in 1653, 108 in 1654, and 106 in 1655 (which stops on June 30).
