Profil und Ziele des Sonderforschungsbereichs 1265 "Re-Figuration von Räumen"
No full textThis working paper provides an overview of the research program and profile of the Collaborative Research Center 1265 (CRC 1265). It outlines some of the central results of its first funding period as well as research objectives and approaches for its second funding period, namely the investigation of new spatial arrangements, conflicts and multiple spatialities. The text is a slightly revised English translation of key parts of the CRC’s proposal for the second phase of its funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The CRC 1265 focuses on the investigation of current processes of spatial reordering and societal restructuring as a refiguration of spaces. Central to its investigation is the conceptualization of sociality as an inherently spatial phenomenon. The work of the CRC thereby aims to develop an empirically grounded theory of contemporary social change as a processual, spatial-communicative refiguration. As the CRC 1265 progresses with its investigation in its second funding phase, it aspires to contribute to the field of social science research by offering a comprehensive and empirically grounded perspective on contemporary processes of social change.Das vorliegender Working Paper gibt einen Überblick über das Forschungsprogramm und das Profil des Sonderforschungsbereichs 1265 (SFB 1265). Es skizziert einige der zentralen Ergebnisse der ersten Förderperiode sowie die Forschungsziele und -ansätze für die zweite Förderperiode, insbesondere die Untersuchung neuer räumlicher Anordnungen, Konflikte und multiple spatialities. Der Text ist eine leicht überarbeitete englische Übersetzung der Schlüsselteile des Fortsetzungsantrags des SFB für die zweite Phase seiner Förderung durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Der SFB 1265 konzentriert sich auf die Untersuchung aktueller Prozesse räumlicher Neuordnung und gesellschaftlicher Umstrukturierung als „Refiguration von Räumen.“ Im Zentrum steht dabei die Konzeptualisierung von Sozialität als inhärent räumliches Phänomen. Ziel der Arbeit des SFB ist es, eine empirisch fundierte Theorie des gegenwärtigen sozialen Wandels als prozessuale, räumlich-kommunikative Refiguration zu entwickeln. No full textThis Working Paper summarizes key findings from the second funding phase of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1265 “Re-Figuration of Spaces” and outlines the research agenda for the third phase. The CRC’s approach is based on an understanding of social change as refiguration, i.e., as spatial processes of reordering emerging from tensions between different spatial figures and their associated logics of action. Following an introduction to the topological spatial figures as a central analytical tools, the paper presents selected results from Project Areas A (Knowledge of Spaces), B (Spaces of Digital Mediatization), and C (Circulation and Order) and links them to overarching findings of the CRC. The empirical studies demonstrate how spatial dynamics of change manifest as variations of refiguration in diverse fields, such as migration and displacement, ecological transformations, protest movements, or digitalized practices, revealing global entanglements alongside counter-movements of closure. In the third funding phase, the CRC aims to consolidate the theory of refiguration, to further refine its empirical and diagnostic value, and to make it applicable to design- and planning-oriented practice fields. Central to this endeavor are the cross-cutting description of “figurations in transition” and the further specification of spatial-figure analysis. On this basis, a spatial-theoretical model of interpretive explanation will be developed and linked with a design model for application-oriented practice. Moreover, the diagnostic capacity of the refiguration concept will be expanded through research in three conflict fields (“Limits of Pluralization,” “Politics of Infrastructuring,” “Ruptures of Ecologization”). This work relies on the CRC’s close interdisciplinary collaboration, its international research networks, and the methodological concept of multiple spatialities, which enables comparative perspectives beyond territorially defined spaces and systematically integrates spatial positionalities into the analysis.Dieses Working Paper fasst die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der zweiten Förderphase des Sonderforschungsbereichs (SFB) 1265 „Re-Figuration von Räumen” zusammen und skizziert die Forschungsagenda für die dritte Phase. Der Ansatz des SFB basiert auf einem Verständnis von sozialem Wandel als Refiguration, d. h. als räumliche Prozesse der Neuordnung, die aus Spannungen zwischen verschiedenen Raumfiguren und den damit verbundenen Handlungslogiken entstehen. Nach einer Einführung in die topologischen Raumfiguren als zentrales Analyseinstrument präsentiert das Working Paper ausgewählte Ergebnisse aus den Projektbereichen A (Raumwissen), B (Räume der digitalen Mediatisierung) und C (Zirkulation und Ordnung) und verknüpft sie mit den übergreifenden Erkenntnissen des SFB. Die empirischen Studien zeigen, wie sich räumliche Veränderungsdynamiken als varieties of refiguration in verschiedenen Bereichen manifestieren, beispielsweise in Migration und Vertreibung, ökologischen Transformationen, Protestbewegungen oder digitalisierten Praktiken, und dabei globale Verflechtungen sowie Gegenbewegungen der Abschottung offenlegen. In der dritten Förderphase will der SFB die Theorie der Refiguration konsolidieren, ihren empirischen und diagnostischen Wert weiter verfeinern und sie für design- und planungsorientierte Praxisfelder anknüpfungsfähig machen. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Vorhabens stehen die übergreifende Beschreibung von „Figurationen im Wandel“ und die weitere Spezifizierung der Raumfiguranalyse. Auf dieser Grundlage wird ein raumtheoretisches Modell der interpretativen Erklärung entwickelt und mit einem Entwurfsmodell für die anwendungsorientierte Praxis verknüpft. Darüber hinaus wird die diagnostische Leistungsfähigkeit des Konzepts der Refiguration durch Forschung in drei Konfliktfeldern („Grenzen der Pluralisierung“, „Politik der Infrastrukturing“, „Brüche der Ökologisierung“) erweitert. No full textThe Working Paper outlines the guiding ideas, the basic methodology and the practical and organizational implementation of the Collaborative Research Centre 1265 "Re-Figuration of Spaces" (abbr.: CRC). The CRC 1265, established by the DFG in 2018, is characterized by an unique constellation in Berlin: The concurrence of spatial theory and communicative constructivism as well as an intense cooperation between sociology, geography, architecture, media and communication studies, art and planning. This constellation promises, firstly, the development of innovative spatial science methods and, secondly, the development of a transdisciplinary spatial research facilitated by the CRC. In addition to the methodological and practical surplus value, this integrated spatial science research also aims to offer a general model of societal development.Das Working Paper stellt die leitenden Ideen, die grundlegende Methodologie und die praktisch-organisatorische Umsetzung des Sonderforschungsbereichs 1265 „Re-Figuration von Räumen“ (Abk.: SFB) vor.
