A corpus-based study of lexical bundles and moves by english l1 and l2 writers in medical journal abstracts
Many English L2 writers in the field of medicine encounter difficulties when writing English-medium journal abstracts. Previous studies have shown a need to improve the quality of medical journal abstracts when reporting randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Thus, it is important to gain sensitivity to the use of lexical bundles commonly shared by community members. However, little research has been conducted to explore the characteristics of lexical bundles between English L1 and L2 writers in medical journal abstracts. This study aims to investigate the use of lexical bundles and those with keywords between native speakers of English (NSE) writers and Korean non-native speakers of English (NNSE) writers by examining essential items connected to the moves of medical journal abstracts. The study extracted three to nine-word lexical bundles occurring at least five times across five different texts from prestigious medical journals published in English-speaking countries and Korea, respectively. Types and tokens of lexical bundles, including those with keywords, extracted at 0.0001 were examined between the corpora in accordance with each item of medical journal abstracts. It was observed that lexical bundles related to signals of research objectives, there-patterns, and hedges were frequently used by NNSE writers. On the other hand, NSE writers prominently used lexical bundles to report items related to research methodology, results with statistical markers, and negative events. The findings of the study show that NNSE writers lack awareness of discipline-specific conventions and essential items to include in medical journal abstracts. © 2020 KASELL

The development of English personal reference in the Korean ESL learner corpus
This study provides both qualitative and quantitative analysis of an emerging pattern regarding the establishment and maintenance of English personal reference as well as interaction between linguistic forms and discourse context The data for the study consist of approximately 44 hours of NS-NNS spontaneous conversations over 13 months. The research findings clearly demonstrate that even though the learners' production is constrained by limited English proficiency, learners convey their thoughts by means of discourse strategies and dependence on an intermediate system, e.g., repetition of NP for reference maintenance. Further, the learners' data exhibit a clear developmental pattern: (1) the emergence of linguistic forms prior to the mastery of form-function associations; (2) enhanced management of established referent in the later stages; and (3) display of a longer average distance between the referential phrases and their preceding mention in the later stages

Identifying Developmental Dyslexia in 9 Korean Elementary School Students at Risk for Dyslexia
Objectives: The purpose of this case profile study is to discuss the diagnosis model of dyslexia, the characteristics of comorbidity, and how the results of various reading-related measurements can be linked to interpret the diagnosis. Methods: Nine elementary school students with suspected dyslexia (N=9) were diagnosed through existing diagnostic models the differences between the models were examined. The results of the dyslexic diagnosis, along with comorbidities were analyzed using corresponding analysis. Finally, profile analyses of the reading-related variables were conducted for the dyslexic group classified through the corresponding analysis. Results: As a result of the first section of this analysis, the criteria for diagnosing dyslexia differed in the three diagnostic models, so the nine suspected dyslexics were classified differently depending on the diagnostic model. As a result of the second portion of this analysis, it was possible to classify the dyslexic group according to comorbidities such as DLD, ADHD, SSD, TOT. And the result of the third section of this analysis showed that decoding, reading comprehension, reading fluency, and listening comprehension, which are classified as key tests for diagnosing dyslexia, affected the classification of dyslexia according to comorbidity or reading ability. However, the key results differentiated by this classification were not relevant to the reading ability test (phonological awareness, phonological memory, phonological processing ability, writing). Conclusion: In this study, diagnosis models and evaluation plans for dyslexia were presented in a language development approach in consideration of the aspect of language development from the perspective of speech-language therapy. © 2020 UKSS and NAS
