The relevance of education today
The article interprets the results of qualitative research within the GOETE project. It discusses how 9th grade students relate to the relevance of education today by analysing their educational decisions within the framework of the ideology of choice in contemporary Slovenian society. It attempts to categorise reasons for the relevance of education and provide two typical strategies students employ in order to be able to make educational choices in a socio-economic environment which does not favour such important life-educational decisions.Članek interpretira rezultate kvalitativne raziskave projekta GOETE.
Factors that influenced students faculty choice in case of Faculty of Social Sciences
In the times of rapid socioeconomic changes, the things that are also changing are life courses and transitions. People are faced with choices and decisions on every step of the way, especially young people whose decisions could have a long-term effect. A decision of where to continue one\u27s education after high school would be such an example. In Slovenia, most reaserches on education focus either on transitioning from elementary school to high school, or from school to labour market. But since so many young people continue their education in an undergraduate program, they have to choose their desired Faculty as well. Based on half-structured interviews with ten students from Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, I investigate the factors that influenced their decision-making process of choosing a Faculty. It turns out that continuing to a higher education is a decision based upon graduating from a non-vocational high school. People also make their decision focusing on their interest in a general field of studies rather than having a specific career in mind. My interviewees claim that their friends and family did not significantly affect their final decision of choosing their Faculty, but were instead seen more as supporters of the whole process. In the context of growing individualization, I am realizing young people feel the need to be self-initiative during college, which will later on serve them as they are looking for a job
The motives for education in the third period of life
Changes are the only constant of the modern society, and all its members must be able to adapt to them. Skills, abilities, and knowledge are necessary to adapt and successfully overcome any obstacles. It is crucial that people strive towards knowledge throughout their lives, as this is the only way they will become competitive within a society. It is therefore extremely important that older adults are also offered various forms and opportunities for active participation in the social environment. Non-formal education is one of the opportunities that enables older adults active (spare) time, upgrading and acquiring new knowledge and creating new social networks. This research is based on eight interviews with participants who educated themselves in the third period of life. The data shows that the motives for the participation are different and depend on the individual’s desire. The interviewees attach great value and importance to education, as it represents actively spent (spare) time and socializing. In addition to socializing and creating new social networks, it is also important for them to share the acquired knowledge. According to them, there should be even more connections and cooperation between the generations in the future
The Impact of Cultural Diversity on the Work Environment and Interpersonal Relationships: A Case Study of Work in an Airline Company
Organizational culture encompasses values, practices, and procedures within an organization and is expressed through patterns of behavior and employee relationships. It is important that it fosters commitment, collaboration, and innovation while enhancing organizational performance. We investigated the influence of culture and habits on work in the aviation industry through semi-structured interviews with seven participants. The study revealed that an individual\u27s culture, faith, beliefs, and daily habits impact their adaptation and attitude towards work in the aviation industry. Social relationships from one\u27s home environment are linked to social interactions in the aviation industry. Difficulties in adapting to work in the aviation industry also affected participants\u27 daily lives after leaving the industry. We emphasize the significance of understanding individuals\u27 cultural dimensions in the organizational environment and promoting diversity and inclusivity to create a harmonious working environment in the aviation industry
Atopic dermatitis and everyday life: the role of support groups
Atopic dermatitis, also known as atopic eczema, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects over 15% of the global population, often appearing in childhood. Symptoms such as intense itching, redness, and skin inflammation can significantly impact patients\u27 daily lives, affecting sleep quality and social interactions. While some individuals outgrow the condition by adolescence, it can persist into adulthood, requiring long-term management with proper skincare and medications. Beyond the physical symptoms, atopic dermatitis also presents psychological challenges, including low self-esteem, social isolation, and stigma due to visible skin changes. As the exact causes of the disease remain unclear, treatment focuses on symptom relief and preventing flare-ups, with an emphasis on personalized care. Understanding and support from the surrounding community are crucial for improving the quality of life for patients, who often face discrimination and marginalization due to their condition. The aim of this thesis is to examine the impact of atopic dermatitis on patients\u27 quality of life and the role of support groups in addressing these challenges
Transactional analysis for leadership development
Master\u27s thesis Transactional Analysis for Leadership Development, investigates the applicability of Transactional Analysis in Leadership. Key theoretical foundations, based on the theory of E. Brene, are presented. The thesis provides detailed definitions of leadership, ego states, transactions, life scripts and psychological games. In the empirical section of the thesis, qualitative research was conducted using semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that leaders acknowledge the importance of strong interpersonal relationships in building a stable work environments. They identify the recognition of employees personality characteristics as a crucial attribute of effective leadership. Leaders are conscious of the impact of individual emotional states and responses within interpersonal relationships. Due to the challenges arising in interpersonal relationships, leaders express a desire for novel approaches for managing workplace relationships. The research suggests that leaders predominantly operate from the ego state of Parent, which can make relationships with employees difficult and reduce productivity of organizations. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how TA tools can be utilized to enhance and manage interpersonal relationships in organizations. By understanding fundamental TA concepts, leaders can learn to identify ego states, comprehend emotional responses and build up their Adult ego state. So consequently they can respond and communicate more effectively
Young social science students before their transition to the labor market
The transition from the educational system to the labor market is an important life transition, which presents a big step towards the transition to adulthood for young individuals. The transition to adulthood in traditional societies was relatively linear – upon the completion of an education, individuals got a job, and afterwards created their own family. Today, the transition to adulthood is pluralized, fragmentized, and characterized by the process of individualization. Young individuals represent a vulnerable group in the labor market, i.e., the entrance for young graduates into the labor market is insecure. The labor market is also insecure when it comes to social science graduates, as they represent the largest group of unemployed graduates. Generally, the numbers of unemployed young individuals have decreased in the past years. However, these numbers have started to increase in the light of the coronavirus that has characterized the year 2020 so far. The insecurity of the labor market is one of the main concerns of the students that I have interviewed for this master thesis. Employing qualitative methodology, I conducted ten interviews with students of sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences. My goal was to determine student expectations regarding transition to the labor market. My results demonstrate that young individuals are aware of the labor market situation for social science graduates. They expect and fear uncertain employments, often in the form of non-permanent contracts. They also express fear in that the knowledge they have gained will not be sufficient for appropriate employment, which would mean that they would have to accept a job that is outside the scope of their field of studies
Being a Woman, Being a Mother: Local Study of Early Motherhood
Odločitev žensk, kdaj in če imeti otroka, je močno povezana s tem, kako se je skozi zgodovino v družbi razvijalo pojmovanje materinstva in njegovo vrednotenje. Mnogim ženskam danes materinska vloga ni več prioriteta, vse pomembnejši so jim drugi osebni načrti in cilji. Vse, z izjemo ene matere, so zanosile nenačrtovano. Women’s decision whether and when to have a child is closely connected with how the conception and society’s perception of motherhood have evolved throughout history. Nowadays, many women do not see their maternal role as a priority – they find other personal plans and goals more important. Analysing interviews with young mothers, I aimed to identify the contributing factors of why young women in Škofja Loka decide to have a child earlier in life, what significance these women attach to motherhood, and in what aspects this significance differs from that reflected by the trend of late motherhood. Young mothers see motherhood through the mother-child relationship. They believe that the roles of father and mother in relation to the child vary, which still relates to biological determinism. For them, motherhood is an important and responsible role they have assumed in life as women, and no one can take that away from them. None of these young mothers, except one, planned their pregnancy. The deciding factor for keeping a child and assuming the maternal role is a faithful partner. Unlike women who postpone their maternal role until later in life, either because they do not see it as most important in their life, or due to circumstances, such as labour market requirements, young mothers find joy and contentment in motherhood
