INSPIRE: a proposal for its future development
Inspire is a project that has been established to support “libraries in working together to improve access to information and learning for all”. Participating libraries are committed to supporting learning in its widest sense and together they provide an open route to the information library users are seeking, wherever it may be found.
It was instituted in 2004 under the energetic leadership of Mary Heaney (formerly Director of Learning Centres at the University of Wolverhampton and now Director of Services at Manchester Metropolitan University) and Andrew Green (then Head of Libraries & Information Services, Coventry City Council and now Head of Library and Heritage Service, Wandsworth Council). Mary resigned her role with Inspire in 2006 and was replaced by Philip Payne, (Librarian, Birkbeck College). Sally Curry is its Inspire National Partnerships Manager.
Funding was provided by the Department of
Culture, Media and Sport, the Museums Libraries and Archives Council, the British Library, SCONUL and the Society of Chief Librarians.
Inspire is also supported by the Committee on Library Cooperation in Ireland (COLICO), the National Library of Scotland, the National Library of Wales, the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals, and the Colleges of Further & Higher Education
'INSPIRE compliant web services': An assessment of the quality and feasibility of the INSPIRE guidelines
The INSPIRE infrastructure and its implementation could be considered as mainly a legal and practical implementation issue. However it also tends to be a topic dealt with on a scientific research and educational level, because of its highly innovative character. This paper presents the findings of a research project on ‘INSPIRE compliant web services’. Main objective of the project is to assess the quality and feasibility (in the sense of completeness, consistency and ease-of-implementation) of the guidelines for INSPIRE Network Services. Part of this assessment is also the question: how can INSPIRE compliance be tested and measured?OTB OnderzoekOTB Research Institute for the Built Environmen
Idmb: a tool for navigating the Inspire data model and generating an Inspire SQL database and WFS Configuration
The Inspire Data Model Browser (IDMB) is a free tool that performs the following functions: (i) it presents the Inspire UML Data Model as a tree-based structure, which is complementary to the UML diagrams; (ii) it generates a Postgis SQL Script for creating an INSPIRE compliant SQL database (Inspire Database) and a configuration file for the Deegree tool that enables the access to the Inspire Database through a Web Feature Service (WFS) producing GML according to the Inspire XML Schemas
