Machine learning prediction of tortuosity in digital rock

Physical rock property measurement is an important stage in energy exploration, both for hydrocarbons and geothermal sources. The value of physical rock properties can provide information about reservoir quality, and one of these properties is tortuosity. Tortuosity is an intrinsic property of porous materials that describes the level of complexity of the porous arrangement when a fluid passes through it. Conventionally, tortuosity values are measured through laboratory analysis and numerical simulation, but these measurements can take a long time. An alternative method for measuring tortuosity is using machine learning with a convolutional neural network (CNN). A CNN is a type of deep neural network designed to analyze multi-channel images and has been applied successfully to classification and non-linear regression problems. By training a CNN on a dataset of digital rock samples that have been simulated using numerical computation to obtain their tortuosity values, it is possible to demonstrate that CNNs can accurately predict the tortuosity of digital rock. The result is that the CNN model can predict tortuosity values with the Xception model being the most accurate with the lowest RMSE value of 0.90962

Ambient Noise Data Processing to Obtain Group Velocity for Subsurface Structure Identification: Preliminary Research in Hululais Geothermal Field, Sumatra, Indonesia

Hululais area lies in the pull-apart basins of the Ketaun Segment and Musi Segment fault as a part of the Sumatra Fault Zone (SFZ). The boundary normal faults of pull-apart basins play an important role as major discharge zones for geothermal fluid because the extensional stress is concentrated in the boundary normal faults. In order to identify the geothermal reservoir structure in Hululais Geothermal Field (HGF), we introduce the local-scale study of the Rayleigh wave group velocity structure using ambient noise tomography (ANT). The ANT studies were collected using 18 seismometers inside 12 km2 area with a spacing of 125 – 500 meters, deployed across the fault structure for 1 month. More than two thousand Rayleigh Green’s Functions are extracted by cross-correlation at available station pairs. Using the estimated green function in this preliminary research, the group velocity as a function of the period can measure the dispersion curve by using multiple filter technique (MFT) and fast marching surface tomography (FMST) scheme to obtain group velocity images. The tomography result as group velocity image shows the subsurface Rayleigh wave structure variation. The NW-SE main structure is reflected by the contrast velocity structure between the central part and the north eastern-south western sides. The central part shows the low periods which are associated with low wave velocity However the margin of the central part shows the high velocity in all periods. The ANT studies have been efficient in time and cost, however useful in subsurface structure interpretation in Hululais Geothermal Field

Hydrocarbon Spectra Slope (HYSS): A Spectra Index for Quantifying and Characterizing Hydrocarbon oil on Different Substrates Using Spectra Data

Many sensors in Optical domain allow for detection of hydrocarbons in oil spills study. However, high resolution laboratory and airborne imaging spectrometers have shown potential for quantification and characterization of hydrocarbon. Available methods in literature for quantifying and characterizing  hydrocarbons on these data relies mainly on shapes and positions of hydrocarbon key absorption features, mainly at 1.73 µm and 2.30 µm. Shapes formed by these absorption features are often influenced by spectral features of background substrates, thereby limiting the quality of results. Furthermore, multispectral sensors cannot resolve the shapes of key absorption features, a strong limitation for methods used in previous works. In this study, we present Hydrocarbon Spectra Slope (HYSS), a new spectra index that offers predictive quantification and characterization of common hydrocarbon oils. Slope values for the studied hydrocarbon oils enable clear discrimination for relative quantitative analysis of oil abundance classes and qualitative discrimination for common hydrocarbons on common background substrates. Data from ground-based spectrometers and Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) are resampled to AVIRIS, Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and LANDSAT 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper’s (ETM+) Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), in order to compute spectra slope values for hydrocarbon abundance /hydrocarbon-substrate characterization. Despite limitations of nonconformity of central wavelengths and/or band widths of multispectral sensors to key hydrocarbon band, statistical significance for both quantitative and qualitative analysis at 95% confidence level (P-value ˂0.01) suggests strong potential of the use of HYSS, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors as emergency response tools for hydrocarbon mapping

Lineament Density and Implications for the Distribution of Ground Fissures After 2021 MW 7.3 Flores Sea Earthquake on Kalaotoa Island, Indonesia

A 7.3 MW earthquake occurred at 11:20 am on December 14, 2021, in the Flores Sea, and the main shake was centered ±100 km north of Maumere, Indonesia, with a depth of 14.3 km, antecedent a landslide. This research consists of two stages, namely: quantitative data collection in the form of tectonic lineament density measurements using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data which is extracted manually using GIS-based applications, and qualitative data in the form of field observations which include strike-dip measurements of rocks, lithological data, morphological conditions, ground fissures, and the distribution of damage caused after 2021 earthquake. This study focused on analyzing the value of lineament density, its correlation to the history of seismicity and surface lithological conditions, and the impact after the 2021 earthquake damage. The lineaments of the southern area are dominated by NE – SW orientation along with various lithological conditions and with lineament density values very low – very high. A crack width from 0.5 to 112 cm, and a vertical offset occurs with a depth of up to 270 cm. The western area is dominated by lineament with an orientation NE – SW with a crack width from 8 to 18 cm, and there is a vertical offset with a depth of up to 24 cm. The distribution of ground fissures in the Garaupa Raya area is categorized as low. The orientation of the northern area lineament is relatively NW – SE directional and the lineament density value is categorized as low. Horizontal displacement with an orientation of NW – SE is found at the port of Kalaotoa Island, Kawawo village with measured crack width of ±17 cm, an observable horizontal offset from 15 to 24 cm, and a vertical offset of ±12 cm with a trend of movement towards the south

Petrology and Mineralogy of Metamorphic Rocks in The Pringsewu District, Lampung Province, Indonesia

The origin of metamorphic rock is greatly influenced by the temperature and pressure changes in every tectonic setting, especially in active subduction margins. One of the wide outcrops of metamorphic rock occurs in the Pringsewu District, Lampung, and it is a part of the Palaeozoic Gunung Kasih Complex. The presence of metamorphic rocks in Pringsewu has raised several questions and debates for some time due to the lack of research and field evidence found in this area, especially, since the origin of metamorphic rock in Lampung has been rarely studied. This research aims to determine the metamorphic rock facies and the tectonic setting underlying the formation of metamorphic rocks in the study area. Petrographic analysis on 19 thin-section samples shows that metamorphic rock in the research area can be divided into two regions i.e., western and eastern regions. The Eastern part is characterized by muscovite-epidote schist and greenschist which consist of quartz, muscovite, actinolite, epidote, and garnet as index minerals. Whereas the western part is characterized by quartzite and biotite-epidote schist that consist of quartz, biotite, and muscovite. Based on the mineral index, metamorphic rock’s protoliths are pelitic rock, mafic rock, and quartz-feldspathic sandstone. The metamorphic rock zonation shows the created temperature is from 280-550oC. The foliation structure such as schistose and porphyroblastic texture in the whole rocks sample indicated that metamorphic rocks are created in medium-grade metamorphism and are characterized by the greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies. The abundance of quartz, k-feldspar, and labradorite minerals show that metamorphic rocks came from the microcontinent which was caused by a collision between the intra-oceanic Woyla plate and West Sumatra microcontinent in the Cretaceous. Indications of tectonic activity that create the lithology in Lampung Province need more geological study, especially to determine the absolute age of the metamorphic rock

Electrical Resistance Tomographic by Using Current Injection and Magnetic Field Induction

A critical issue in electrical tomography is ill-posed problems due to low sensitivity. In the electric current injection method, the placement of the injection electrode on the object boundary can influence it. This condition causes the reconstruction result of parameter change far away from the boundary to be inferior in quality. Another excitation method is using magnetic field induction proposed to overcome these problems. Each reconstruction image was obtained using two methods with three types of parameter changes, that represented the edge and the center of the object position. Both reconstruction results are merged and further processed to enhance the quality of the image, based on the average value of the resistivity of each element. The results show that the final image reconstruction has a smaller root mean square error (RMSE) than the electric current injection method

Design and Implementation of a Composite Array Resistivity Data Logger for High-Resolution 2D Inversion Modeling

The use of resistivity meters to model subsurface conditions is widespread. However, commercial instruments are mostly limited to conventional configurations, such as Wenner, Schlumberger, and dipole-dipole. Moreover, we cannot modify the program on the instrument. In this study, we designed and implemented a DC resistivity meter that can potentially be developed in the future and can be used in composite array configurations. This instrument uses a half-bridge SMPS as a power supply, which is capable of generating a large power, an Arduino Uno, and several sensor modules as part of a flexible and easy-to-program control unit. We conducted laboratory and field tests, comparing two types of configurations, namely Wenner and composite arrays (dipole-dipole and gradient). We then processed the data using ResIPy software, which enables displaying complex data sets in the form of 2D cross-sections and assessing the quality of post-processing data. We obtained good data with low RMS misfit that matched the synthetic media created in laboratory testing and compared well with previous research

Basaltic Lava Characteristic in Goa Pandan Area, Sukadana, East Lampung: Inferences from Stratigraphy and Petrography Analysis

The presence of extensive basalt formations in East Lampung has its own attractions in the field of geology, particularly the presence of Goa Pandan as a lava cave and tourist attraction in East Lampung. The presence of basalt lava in the southern part of the South Sumatra Basin has drawn attention to the presence of this lava, but detailed research on the characteristics of the lava and its formation process is still very rare. This study aims to determine the eruption period of the basalt lava and magma evolution process based on the correlation between lava stratigraphy and petrography analysis. Field observations show a lava sequence that forms Goa Pandan. Each lava sequence is characterized by autobreccia and vesicular structures on the surface. In addition, the presence of columnar joints, sheeting joints, massive lava, and other additional structures indicate the characteristics of low-viscosity basalt lava. The presence of mineral structures and abundance under the microscope clearly shows the magma formation process when basalt lava flowed on the surface. Resorption-overgrowth of plagioclase and pyroxene minerals indicates an open system when basalt lava flowed on the surface. In addition, the presence of zoning and patching in plagioclase minerals indicates that magma variability is influenced by temperature. The documentation of this lava stratigraphy can serve as a basis for further understanding of magma characteristics and formation processes. There is still much geological work that can be done in the research area to get a detailed picture of the evolution process of magma and the presence of basalt lava in this area

Field Development with Scenario Reactivation of Non-Active Zones Through Reservoir Simulation: A Case Study of The Kappa Offshore Field, West Natuna

This research provides the scenario of a field development plant with the primary goal of acknowledging the reservoir model of Kappa Field in determining the optimum field development scenario to increase the recovery factor. In this research, field development will be carried out by creating scenarios that differentiate certain parameters to see the differences from these scenarios. The main problem in this field is to find out the feasibility of a field that has a history of production from 1986 to 2022 or for 33 years. In addition, the main objective of this research is to determine the reservoir driving mechanism of the Pasir RH-7 layer and determine the best field development scenario to optimize production in the Kappa field. The method used in this study is the reservoir modeling method using production data and reservoir data that has been obtained from the company and then managed using the Petrel Software assisted by Eclipse and MatBal. Before developing field development scenarios, an analysis is carried out using several different methods, including analysis with the decline curve analysis method in determining the remaining recoverable reserves as the validation of Kappa Field's feasibility, identify the driving mechanism of the reservoir, and history matching between history production data with simulation results. Sensitivity analysis of the field development is also conducted through various scenarios, including adding or adjusting well perforation interval, infill well adding, five water injection wells, and four gas injection wells. Other than that, injection gas and water rates in injection wells are also being exercised during the sensitivity analysis. Simulation results show the best scenario of Kappa Field is ten infill wells and four injection wells with a water injection rate of 1000 BWPD and gas injection rate of 1 MMSCF/d, giving the optimum recovery factor result of 39.33% from oil reserves. The results of this research will have a positive impact on the development of the Kappa field in order to increase production from fields that have been producing since 1986 and stopped production in 2019
