The Impact of Housing Insecurity on Health in the United States

    No full text
Housing affordability remains a persistent issue across the United States. Understanding how housing insecurity affects both mental and physical health is essential. This study addresses the connection between health outcomes and housing insecurity by analyzing data across states with varying levels of housing instability. Our research design focuses on the underlying mental and physical health issues correlated with high rates of housing insecurity. I hypothesize that there is a strong correlation between housing insecurity and health concerns, highlighting the need for new housing affordability policies aimed at mitigating these negative outcomes

Undergraduate Students\u27 Perceptions and Understanding of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

    No full text
Psychedelics have shown significant therapeutic benefit for those struggling with their mental health (Luoma et al., 2020). Previous research has suggested that mental health practitioners hold favorable attitudes towards psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) but lack the proper knowledge to counsel clients on the subject (Kucsera et al., 2023). As PAT becomes more mainstream, it is important to understand the attitudes of those currently in or planning to enter the mental health field. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate students’ attitudes toward PAT compared to more conventional mental health treatment modalities. This study also investigated the accuracy of students’ knowledge regarding PAT and the classic psychedelic, psilocybin. A total of 50 undergraduate students participated in this study. Participants were presented with four vignettes, which were counterbalanced to reduce order effects: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), PAT, and self-medication with psilocybin. Participants had to respond to a set of statements regarding their attitudes toward the treatment after each vignette. Then, they were asked to respond to statements assessing their knowledge of PAT. A one-way, repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a significant main effect of treatment type on students’ perceptions, such that attitudes were most favorable toward the CBT treatment, followed by SSRI, then PAT, and finally self-medication. All the differences were statistically significant (p \u3c .001). Despite demonstrating fairly accurate knowledge of PAT and psilocybin, participants held less favorable attitudes towards psychedelic use for mental health treatment, especially in comparison to CBT and SSRI treatments

3D Printed Engineered Technologies for qRT-PCR Techniques

    No full text
Semiquantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) is used to detect and quantify RNA to measure relative gene expression by using fluorescently labeled probes which become activated upon binding. qRT-PCR may be done on a 96-well plate allowing for analysis of multiple samples at once. Such a technique can be prone to errors while filling wells, leading to lost time and money. Despite efforts to find a solution to this problem, the solutions remain imperfect. A novel way this problem can be rectified is by utilizing computer software to design and produce a physical tool through 3D printing. This tool can be adjustable, produced simply, and saves otherwise wasted materials, and it has support indicating its’ ability to minimize total loading errors

Cryogenic temperature effects on the tensile strength of various materials

    No full text
In low temperature applications, the tensile properties of materials has been observed to differ from observations in ambient conditions. The extent at which these properties vary at differing temperature ranges is the topic of explorations. Using a modified Dewar, which has been added to an existing tensile test apparatus, it is possible to submerge a material sample in cryogenic liquids. This will bring the samples to a more uniform temperature, which is important to a consistent result. After applying force to samples, the stress strain analysis can be interpreted to determine the effects of the test temperature on the results. Various materials have been tested. The reproducible manufacturing and testing of these samples have also been explored. Forged Carbon Fiber is a relatively new development, and the low temperature tensile properties have been explored to compare newer material developments to established methods. To build upon these observations, this can apply to the Hydrogen economy. As this economy becomes more viable in both an economic and material sense, research into the effective storage of cryogenic hydrogen is integral to an efficient economy. Being able to determine the best materials for such vessels or utilities will be an important step in optimizing these processes

    Reducible Block Companion Matrices

We study block companion matrices C of size mn x mn where the m blocks, denoted Ak for k=1, .., m, are n x n matrices of a particular form. We explore specific forms of C for arbitrary m, n by looking at their corresponding directed graphs. Using a relabeling of the vertices, we produce a diagonal block form for C for some types of non-strongly connected Ak\u27s. We found that, for some forms of Ak, the relabeling produces diagonal blocks of smaller matrices having the same form as C. These are then used to simplify the problem of finding the characteristic polynomial of C to that of finding characteristic polynomials of matrices having the same form as C but of smaller order

Fostering Resilience: Supporting Children Through Trauma

    No full text
Every day, children go into the foster care system with various forms of trauma. Many child welfare agencies use trauma-informed care in order to understand and recognize, promote healing, provide support, and much more. This form of care is evidence-based and defines forms of trauma such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, and loss/separation. The Life Incidence of Traumatic Events (LITE) assessment is a survey used by the child welfare agency– Focus on Youth– to measure the different kinds of and how much trauma every foster youth comes into care. Each year, Focus on Youth employees analyze the data from the LITE assessments in order to assess how to properly use trauma-informed care when helping their clients. By doing so, they are able to provide necessary support, guidance, and resources to help the foster children succeed and improve their lives. In this descriptive research study, results from the last five years (2020-2024) were collected in order to describe the kinds of trauma foster children at Focus on Youth face

Trauma Informed Care training needs and perceptions among school and social work staff in a K-12 educational setting

Nearly 50% of juveniles in urban areas have experienced one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE); 10% also experienced at least 4 ACEs before adulthood (Whiteside-Mansell et al., 2019). Exposure from ACEs leads to stress and trauma, which left unaddressed may result in emotions and behaviors that make it difficult to thrive in academic settings. Social work staff (SW) and school staff (SS) work jointly to target this barrier to wellness. Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is an evidence-based method that recognizes expressions of trauma- internally and externally- to personalize supportive interventions and avoid re-traumatization. This study explores needs and perceptions among SW and SS regarding TIC training. Convenience sample survey data from SS at one Cincinnati Public School and SW from Butterfly Support Services were collected (3/10/2025-4/4/2025). Means are reported. Results show that 75% of SW staff (n=8) are trained in TIC and 89% agree they are familiar. In comparison, 67% of SS staff (n=15) were trained and 67% agree they are familiar. SW and SS have 94% and 84% agreement, respectively, that TIC training would be beneficial. 69% of SS agreed that their personal emotions were affected by negative student behavior and 72% believed they had a student that could not be helped with available resources. SW and SS show high positive attitudes towards TIC training. SS more strongly agree there are students that could not be helped within their means and SS were more likely to be emotionally affected by negative student behaviors. Larger scale study is needed

Development of a Dosing Regimen for a Liver-Targeted Polymeric Prodrug

    No full text
Malaria, specifically the species Plasmodium vivax, is extremely widespread. Global warming is projected to increase the number of areas affected by malaria. The only FDA approved therapies (8-aminoquinoline [8-AQ] drugs) conflict with a common enzymopathy, glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. If a patient with G6PD deficiency take an 8-AQ drug, it can cause severe anemia, renal failure, and death. Therefore, there is an increased interest in developing a treatment that can applicable to everyone. A previous study by Pottenger et al. (2024) examined the use of liver-targeted polymer prodrugs. When comparing the original drug to the drug with an altered polymer, the addition of the polymer caused a lower concentration of the drug in the plasma, which would improve the original adverse effects. Pottenger et al. (2024) also used liver cells to evaluate IC50, providing the optimal drug concentration. I used their pharmacokinetic data to make a one-compartment model with a pooled fit, first order absorption, and lag time. My model fit the data well so I used it to perform drug simulations. By combining their separate experiments, I found a discrepancy between the IC50 results and achieving a realistic dose. Further studies should be done to find a liver-targeted prodrug with a more favorable profile
