Market Information on Sourcing Cellulosic Feedstock for Biofuel Production in Northern Plains Region of the United States

This study investigates the availability crop residues within 100 mile radius of a potential biorefinery in southeast North Dakota. Due to the lack of market information on biomass residue supply, we conducted farm focus group survey sessions and empirical field studies to evaluate farmers’ willingness to supply crop residues and timeliness of harvesting. Using a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) application, we locate residue supply areas and numerically show that there are enough crop residues to meet the biorefinery’s supply needs. Our evidence from farm focus group shows that farmers may not be willing to sell their crop residues because of concerns for labor availability and soil fertility losses. Farmers’ decisions to supply crop residues depend on the willingness of a biofuel firm to offer them a contract and ensure price stability. Farmers are unwilling to take any risk in supplying the residues. They prefer to transfer ownership of residues immediately after harvest and have an external party bale, store and transport the goods. The biofuel firm requires crop residues be collected dry to prevent mold. This will challenge Northern Plains farmers who wait to collect stovers prior to winter

The Discourse of Women's Experiences Under Communism

    No full text
The relationship between time passing and the admission of guilt is a complicated one. For how long it took Germany to acknowledge and discuss the atrocities of the Nazi regime, people immediately wondered in 1989 when and how they would approach the discussion of communism and East Germany. The East German example is unique in that there were discernible benefits and successes for its people, and for the most part, it fostered solidarity, camaraderie, and apparent equality. Women were granted unprecedented benefits such as yearlong paid maternity leave and state-funded childcare facilities and were said to have had equal opportunity and equal paid as men. These principles were the base line for all communist regimes in Eastern Europe, and during communist rule, the state allowed literature and propaganda that focused only on these positive principles

Why Women Relapse after Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

Through media exposure in the United States, many people afflicted with drug and alcohol addictions are portrayed in a negative light. If those who have addiction problems are sober for a long time and then relapse, they are especially looked down upon by the sober community. This brings me to my research question: Why do clients relapse once they leave rehabilitation? I am an intern at chemical dependency recovery center. I have seen many women graduate their programs and return back at the center for another try at recovery. Through my time at my internship, I wanted to further research why these women were relapsing once they graduated treatment

Characteristics of Tenure-Line Faculty in Leadership Preparation Programs: An Analysis of Academic Preparation and Administrative Experience

This study investigated the credentials of 755 tenure-line educational leadership faculty members, using data collected through an online questionnaire. Findings disclosed that research institutions were significantly more likely than doctoral or comprehensive institutions to hire faculty with a PhD from a research university and who identified research as their primary professional strength. A greater proportion of faculty in comprehensive universities had served as school administrators before entering academe than was the case for those at research universities. These findings have significant implications for the field, given that an increasing number of school leaders nationally are prepared at comprehensive institutions
