Through the Doors of Apperception: An Approach to the Philosophy of Francisco Gavidia

    No full text
El artículo es parte del proyecto de investigación UCA: "Francisco Gavidia: pensamiento y archivo”In the following paper, the author points out some of the aspects of the philosophical project of the Salvadoran writer Francisco Gavidia. One important contribution is that the author reflects on whether a Latin American philosophy is possible, long before the philosophical debates regarding this matter during the 1960s. Gavidia maintained that this philosophy must overcome the limitations of positivism and provide a perspective of reality rooted both on scientific reason and poetic intuition, given the particularities of Latin American identity. That is what the author calls “apperception”, which he considers as the foundation of his philosophical and cultural project for El Salvador. Nevertheless, Gavidia thought has both the scope and limitations of a philosophy rooted in the 19th century intellectual context but focused on the 20th century problems.

    No full text
The ability of an entrepreneur to create is limited by the lack of resources. Among the dominant resources in emerging countries, the creation, and adoption of new technologies stands out. It is understood that the power to compete and lead in the markets resides in the rarity and distinction in the selection of resources. Many companies choose to increase the complexity of their products and promote the sophistication of services, however; they neglect to strengthen the business model by diversifying their values with the support of external agents. The research objective of this article is to understand the disposition of enterprises to collaborate, cooperate, and coordinate with external agents in order to adopt technology programs and digital competencies. The methodology is based on closed questionnaires for twenty-one managers. The results indicate that there is a greater willingness to collaborate and cooperate than to coordinate, which translates into a greater openness of businesses to work together in an operational rather than strategic context. In depth, the interest in collaboration for the development of digital competencies and cooperation in the transfer of personnel focused on technology exceeds, in comparison, the interest in jointly planning investments in digital transformation programs or making joint hires of information technology specialists. Additionally, companies have high expectations for collaborative work in generating new digital platforms and launching new products, but they lack initiative in creating patents, licenses, or new ventures. Social sustainability in urban mobility: An approach for policies and urban planning from the Global South

    No full text
Historically, transportation projects and urban mobility policies overlook the dimension of social sustainability, mainly focusing on economic and environmental criteria. This neglect, seen enhanced in the Global South, leads to long travel times, growing congestion, reliance on motorcycles, high traffic accident rates, and limited access to public transport, jobs, and urban facilities, especially for the more vulnerable population. In light of these issues, this paper proposes the Social Sustainability of Urban Mobility (SSUM) approach as an analytical framework that assesses the state of social sustainability in urban mobility by applying a Systematic Literature Review where three gaps were found. First, by tailoring the SSUM approach to the context of the Global South, it is possible to address the population-focused gap in urban mobility. Second, in the literature review, a theoretical gap defining social sustainability in urban mobility and its three primary categories has yet to reach a consensus among practitioners and academics. Finally, more empirical research should be conducted to discuss methodological aspects of operationalizing the SSUM approach through the three main categories: accessibility, the sustainability of the community, and institutionality. The SSUM approach promotes implementing a sustainable urban agenda that builds inclusive, equitable, and just cities in urban mobility

    No full text
This study showcases, from a technical and social perspective, the evolution of water pollution in Salvadoran rivers. As a novel contribution on this matter, the study also reveals the presence of emerging contaminants in the Lempa River and the Cerrón Grande Dam as well as in drinking water of a popular town in San Salvador, the Salvadoran capital city. All this information has been used to analyze the hydrosocial cycle and the way in which the lack of access to quality water affects the lives of Salvadorans. An Assessment of Accessibility from a Socially Sustainable Urban Mobility Approach in Mass Transit Projects: Contributions from the Northern Central American Triangle

    No full text
(This article belongs to the Topic Biophilic Cities and Communities: Towards Natural Resources, Environmental and Social Sustainability)This article aims to address the lack of research on the social dimension of sustainability, also known as social sustainability, in urban mobility projects, primarily in cities of the Global South. It proposes a strategy to partially assess social sustainability, focusing on accessibility, which is one of the key dimensions for conducting such an evaluation. To this end, a comparative analysis of three study cases is conducted in the capital cities of the Northern Central American Triangle (NCAT) before and after the construction of bus rapid transit (BRT) projects between 2000 and 2020. Accessibility is evaluated through equity and spatial efficiency indicators obtained through geographical information system (GIS) modeling, including layers representing transportation networks, populated areas, and locations of basic urban facilities. The result is an unprecedented assessment of accessibility in the NCAT capitals, which shows how the Guatemala City BRT project has improved the city’s social sustainability by reducing access times to basic urban facilities, mainly public health clinics and educational facilities, and narrowing the inequality gap as compared to projects in San Salvador and Tegucigalpa, the other capital cities in the NCAT. Additionally, it is emphasized that this methodology can be replicated in the Global South while considering the scarcity of information and the use of open-source software in the process

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the urbanization process in the municipality of Santa Tecla and propose a generic methodology with free tools so that the population can monitor the spatio-temporal process of urbanization in the municipalities of the metropolitan area of San Salvador using Sentinel satellite images and the current regulatory planning instrument as a reference. The evolution of the 30-year temporal space (1991-2021) of the five-year urban sprawl of the municipality of Santa Tecla was analyzed using Landsat satellite data and contrasted with current regulatory instruments or reference techniques. NDVI and NDBI indices calculated from Sentinel-2 satellite data and applying a hybrid image classification methodology, conflicts in real land use were identified with high resolution. The study concluded that the process in the municipality of Santa Tecla has been disorderly in the last 30 years, which has increased the risk for the population, because although there is a legal framework for land use planning, its application has been flexible. A hybrid method of classification based on NDVI and NDBI from satellite images has been used to simplify the manual inspection of the area in a given period of time with an acceptable margin of error.

    No full text

    No full text
