Honorable Mention - The Organs of St. Petersburg : Rebecca Horwitt
“The Organs of St. Petersburg” is an homage to Nikolai Gogol’s famous 1836 short story “The Nose,” in which the titular organ of Major Kovlayov mysteriously disappears from his face and goes on a surreal journey around St. Petersburg, developing a persona of its own (much to the dismay of Major Kovlayov). My story was written on a phone on a Sunday before anyone in the house woke up, which inspired the early morning setting. Writing short fiction is my hobby. My day job is coordinating educational programs at The Arboretum at Penn State.

“When I heard the prompt I knew exactly what I wanted to do. In high school, I made an art piece with a similar theme. This poem is based off of that piece. The piece was inspired by the style of Salvador Dali. It was meant to represent feelings of guilt after being in a toxic relationship. The poem takes a different term though. The original art piece was when I was freshly out of the relationship and still confused with my emotions. The poem, in turn, was written at a point when I felt like I had healed and had a different point of view on the situation.
