Safety of Traditional Medicine: An Evolving Pharmacovigilance Practices in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy (ASU& H) Drugs
The growing use of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy drugs on the global platform has brought public health concerns regarding their safety to the forefront.Increasing over-the-counter use as well misbranding and misleading advertisements of these medicines, raises significant safety concerns, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and increased awareness. The transition of traditional medicine from personalized remedies to mass production has enhanced accessibility but also introduced challenges. The Ministry of AYUSH reported 809 misleading advertisement complaints (2015-2018) and two deaths linked to herbal medicine consumption over three years. India has developed a robust pharmacovigilance program of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy drugs (ASU & H), began in 2008.The Ministry of AYUSH established a three-tier system led by All India Institute of Ayurveda.Establishing causality in traditional medicine remains challenging due to complex multi-herb formulations, inconsistent coding standards, dosage variability, and quality control concerns. To improve safety monitoring, India is working toward enhanced reporting mechanisms, trained personnel, and regulatory actions against misleading advertisements, ensuring the responsible use of ASU&H medicines.Strengthening global collaboration with digital technologies i.e. digital reporting systems can enhance real-time ADR detection and improve patient safety

Ayurvedic Management of Colon Ulcer: A Case Study
Colon ulcer, resembling Pravahika in Ayurveda, is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder characterized by frequent loose stools, mucus and blood in stools, abdominal pain, and tenesmus. This case report describes a 40-year-old male patient presenting with abdominal pain (Udarashoola), burning sensation (Daha), constipation (Vibandha), and bloating (Adhmana). Initial colonoscopy revealed multiple superficial ulcers throughout the colon, while intervening mucosa and terminal ileum were normal, confirming active colonic pathology. Follow-up ultrasonography demonstrated significant healing, with normal bowel wall thickness, preserved stratification, and absence of abnormal vascularity or active inflammation, except for minimal focal mural changes in the descending and sigmoid colon. Ayurvedic assessment identified nidana (causative factors) including consumption of heavy, oily, incompatible foods, irregular meals, psychological stress, and suppression of natural urges, leading to Agni mandya (impaired digestion), Ama formation, and vitiation of Vata and Pitta doshas. This imbalance disrupted Grahani and Pakvashaya function, manifesting as Pravahika-like symptoms. Therapeutic management incorporated pathya ahara (light, easily digestible foods), regulated lifestyle, stress management, and ayurvedic interventions based on Rasapanchaka principles. Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Sonth (Zingiber officinale), and Pippali (Piper longum)—provided digestive stimulation, dosha pacification, and tissue rejuvenation
Role Of Pathya – Apathya and Rasayana for Promoting Eye Health: An Ayurvedic Review
Ayurveda prioritizes ocular health through both prophylactic and therapeutic strategies. The "Chakshu" concept, embodying vision and perception, underscores the importance of maintaining optimal eye function. Central to Ayurvedic understanding is the differentiation between beneficial and detrimental practices, categorized within the Chakshushya Vargas and Achakshushya frameworks. Traditional Ayurvedic scholars delineated daily regimens for preserving eye health; however, contemporary lifestyles often neglect these practices, contributing to a higher incidence of ocular diseases. Rasayana Chikitsa, a specialized branch of Ayurveda, plays a vital role in revitalizing and sustaining physiological functions, including those of the eye. This therapeutic approach aims to enhance longevity, cognitive function, and sensory acuity, while also mitigating age-related ocular pathologies. Within Netra Chikitsa, Naimitika Rasayana and Achara Rasayana are of particular importance. The judicious application of Chakshushya and Rasayana substances bolsters visual acuity and reduces degenerative processes. Integrating these Ayurvedic principles into daily routines can restore and improve eye health, thereby minimizing the effects of modern stressors and environmental factors. This paper examines the Ayurvedic perspective on ocular well-being and introduces key Rasayana substances that are advantageous for preventing and managing Netra Rogas

Significant Role of Ayurveda in achieving Successful Pregnancy in Primary Infertility: A Case Study of Aartava-Dushtijanya Vandhyatva
Ayurveda describes multiple etiological factors for infertility in both males and females, such as vitiation of Shukra (semen/sperm), Aartava (menstrual blood/ovum), and Beeja dushti (vitiation of gametes). The prognosis and line of management are determined based on the predominant dosha. Among Panchkarma, Uttarbasti is considered a key intervention in the management of Vandhyatva (infertility).
The present article reports a case of primary infertility of 11 years’ duration that resulted in conception within one month of individualized Ayurvedic management. The successful outcome was attributed to precise assessment of the pathogenesis and appropriate selection of the therapeutic protocol. The treatment included internal medications, Panchkarma therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Ayurvedic appraisal of the case revealed Aartava -duṣhṭi predominated by Vata-Kapha, correlating clinically with the patient’s history suggestive of PCOD. Uttarbasti —administered as a uterine route therapy for local nourishment and restoration of uterine function—formed an important component of the regimen
Role of Ayurveda in the Clinical Management of Type-II Diabetes Mellitus: A Case Report
Diabetes mellitus is a major global health concern that has affected humankind since ancient times. It is a multifactorial metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia resulting from inadequate insulin secretion, insulin resistance, or a combination of both. In the initial stages, the body compensates for insulin resistance by increasing insulin production; however, over time, this compensatory mechanism becomes insufficient, leading to chronically elevated blood glucose levels.
In recent years, the prevalence of diabetes has risen sharply, primarily due to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, and increasing levels of psychological stress, which are considered key etiological factors. According to the latest data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), approximately 101 million people in India are currently living with diabetes, while about 136 million are in the prediabetic stage.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with several long-term complications, including nephropathy (renal impairment), retinopathy (visual damage), neuropathy (nerve dysfunction), cardiovascular disorders (such as myocardial infarction and stroke), and peripheral arterial disease. In classical Ayurvedic literature, this condition is described as Madhumeha, a subtype of Vataja Prameha, characterized by the excessive passage of sweet-tasting urine.
The present case study involves a 51-year-old female patient who reported to Jeena Sikho Lifecare Limited Hospital, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, with complaints of uncontrolled diabetes for the past six months, numbness in both legs and generalized weakness for six months, and body ache for three months. She has been a known case of type 2 diabetes for the last six years and has been on allopathic medication during this period but patient discontinued this treatment after starting ayurvedic treatment. The treatment approach adopted in this case included the administration of Sanshamana Aushadhi (palliative Ayurvedic medicines), along with appropriate dietary modifications and lifestyle interventions
JANU SHULA IN VATA VYADHI: AN AYURVEDIC CASE STUDY ON VATA SHAMANA AND DHATU POSHANA CHIKITSA
Vata Vyadhi encompasses a wide spectrum of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and degenerative disorders caused by the vitiation of Vata Dosha, which governs movement, nervous function, and musculoskeletal activity. From a modern medical perspective, Vata Vyadhi correlates with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, and osteoporosis, often characterized by tremors, stiffness, weakness, and pain. Janu Shula is commonly associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ligament injuries and is diagnosed using imaging techniques and inflammatory markers. This case study presents a 56-year-old female patient diagnosed with Vata Vyadhi (Janu Shula) at Jeena Sikho Lifecare Limited Hospital, Bathinda, Punjab, India. The patient underwent a comprehensive Ayurvedic treatment protocol, including Ayurvedic formulations, Panchakarma therapies, and dietary and lifestyle modifications, aimed at pacifying Vata, eliminating Ama, nourishing Dhatus, and strengthening the musculoskeletal and nervous systems
Effect of Leaf Extract of Carica Papaya Gel as Local Drug Delivery in Periodontitis Subjects
Introduction: The destruction of tooth supporting structures as a result of an inflammatory host response is the characteristic of periodontitis. Mechanical plaque management techniques like non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) is crucial for preventing these diseases. Carica Papaya leaves are rich in nutrients and vitamins and possess antibacterial, anti-fungal, properties and can be used as a reasonably safe alternative to synthetic pharmaceuticals.
Objectives: To evaluate, compare and correlate the clinical parameters at baseline and 21st day after non-surgical periodontal therapy alone and after placement of Carica Papaya gel.
Methodology: A total of 50 subjects with chronic periodontitis were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A, Non-surgical periodontal therapy alone (25), Group B, Non-surgical periodontal therapy followed by local drug delivery with Carica Papaya gel at selected sites (25). Gingival index, Plaque index, Bleeding on probing, Pocket depth, Clinical attachment level were recorded at baseline and 21st day.
Results: A statistical reduction in the clinical parameters was seen in both the groups. But comparatively Carica Papaya leaf extract gel showed more reduction in BOP, Inflammation and Probing depth when compared with group A.
Conclusion: Carica papaya gel in the form of LDD have demonstrated the efficacy and safety as adjunct products to non-surgical periodontal therapy, with notable improvements in the clinical outcomes which are attributed to their anti-inflammatory property. Hence, Carica papaya gel can be used as a promising therapeutic agent
