This dissertation is focused on the literary analysis of El grongo (1976), second volume of short stories delivered by Uruguayan author and teacher Julio Ricci (1920-1995). The thesis develops around two core ideas: on the one hand, it aims to fix whether his work belongs to a larger movement of national writers, all of which share a marked break from the preceding generation. This drives to the second core idea, which consists on identifying the main themes inside El grongo. Basing on different concepts of realism and how it affected twentieth-century fiction, it aims to delve into those literary devices that show a certain distance from reigning mimetic procedures at a national scale, a characteristic that these break-through authors from the last quarter of the twentieth century share, sometimes labeled as «raros uruguayos»

Panem et circenses: Dystopian Fiction as a Reflection of Postmodern Decadence explores dystopian literature as a manifesto and response to humanity's fundamental problems and questions. This study argues that postmodern dystopias not only reveal the "spirit of the age" but also offer perspectives on the past, present, and future. Human history is marked by profound reflection on existence, death, freedom, and happiness. The uncertainty generated in the early decades of the 20th century resulted in a difficult paradox: the problem of modern and postmodern life lies in the excessive search for meaning and its simultaneous absence. The main goal of this research is to identify common traits in the dystopian genre and analyze how many of its characteristics reflect contemporary trends. Key works such as Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler, the Oryx and Crake trilogy by Margaret Atwood, and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins are examined to understand how these narratives function as warnings about the dangers of contemporary decay and its potential futures

Respecting priorities versus respecting preferences in school choice: when is there a trade-off?

    No full text
A classic trade-off that school districts face when deciding which matching algorithm to use is that it is not possible to always respect both priorities and preferences. The student-proposing deferred acceptance algorithm (DA) respects priorities but can lead to inefficient allocations. We identify a new condition on school choice markets under which DA is efficient. Our condition generalizes earlier conditions by placing restrictions on how preferences and priorities relate to one another only on the parts that are relevant for the assignment. Whenever there is a unique allocation that respects priorities, our condition captures all the environments for which DA is efficient. We show through stylized examples and simulations that our condition significantly expands the range of known environments for which DA is efficient. We also discuss how our condition sheds light on existing empirical findings

Can political gridlock undermine checks and balances? A lab experiment

    No full text
If checks and balances are aimed at protecting citizens from the government’s abuse of power, why do they sometimes weaken them? We address this question in a laboratory experiment in which subjects choose between two decision rules: with and without checks and balances. Voters may prefer an unchecked executive if that enables a reform that, otherwise, is blocked by the legislature. Consistent with our predictions, we find that subjects are more likely to weaken checks and balances when there is political gridlock. However, subjects weaken the controls not only when the reform is beneficial but also when it is harmful

    No full text
This thesis analyzes the evolution of Francisco Berra's account of Uruguayan history in the four editions of his Bosquejo Histórico de la República Oriental del Uruguay, corresponding to 1866, 1874, 1881 and 1895. This analysis was carried out over three chapters in dialogue with the author's pedagogical works, alongside educational regulations and history books contemporary to Berra’s own historiographical production. The focus revolves around the changes that the school manual presents over the years and the dispute that Berra had with a state apparatus that sought to lay the basis for the founding myths of the Uruguayan nation. Thus, in parallel to events such as his famous debates with Carlos María Ramírez or his differences with the historiography devoted to the construction of the national myths as well as similarities with the current historiography are worked upon, alongside the different elements that make up his account of the events that have occurred since the discovery of America until the defeat of Artigas at the hands of the Portuguese. The spectrum of analysis is wide, ranging from the indigenous ethnic groups, the profile of the conqueror, the weight of Geography, the characterization of European nations, the institutions of the Indian Regime, the River Plate revolution and the figure of José Gervasio Artigas all the way to the rhetorical and didactic resources that Berra uses to reinforce his stance on Artigas when addressing children and to defend himself against his detractors

    No full text
Robert Spaemann considers that there is no possibility of ethics without metaphysics serving as its foundation. This work studies and analyzes the elements of metaphysics that underpin the ethics of benevolence, according to Spaemann. In particular, it focuses on the evidence of the reality of the other as another, which arises from a primary intuition. This fundamental evidence presupposes other aspects, such as the discovery of our own nature as subjects or individuals and an awakening to reality – of the world, the other, and ourselves – through reason. To conduct this task, we will first examine the ethics of benevolence and then delve into its metaphysical foundation. Finally, we will compare the ethics of benevolence with consequentialism in order to reaffirm its metaphysical basis

Mapa Verde: participatory cartography and technological imaginaries of the young environmental movement in Uruguay

This article examines Mapa Verde, a participatory digital mapping project co-created by young environmental activists and academic researchers in Uruguay between 2023 and 2025, from the perspective of participatory action research along with social and technopolitical cartography. Drawing on the observation and systematization of collaborative workshops, revision of periodical reports of activities and outcomes, and in-depth interviews with the young activists involved in the participatory cartography, the article reconstructs and interrogates the co-creation process: diagnosis, construction, and evaluation (Calvo & Candón-Mena, 2023). It also analyzes youth imaginaries regarding digital media activism and environmental advocacy through counter-mapping. Pragmatic and critical imaginaries of digital media for activism are found among the young participants who created Mapa Verde, while the collaborative enterprise reflects community-based communication and some traces of counter-data mapping that strengthen identity and foster inter-organizational collaboration. The project expands participatory cartography practices in political ecology and environmental communication, highlighting youth as both agents and cartographers of environmental action. The process shows that mapping is not only a technical exercise but also political, cultural, and pedagogical, enabling new forms of participation and knowledge productio

Hull structures such as stiffened plates and thin panels are the building blocks of ship structures, and therefore understanding their manufacturing process is of utmost importance. The welding process has been widely used to join stiffeners, stringers, and girders onto the plate. The thermo-mechanical loading and constraints during the welding process generally induced deformations and residual stresses. A deep understanding of the process parameters during thermo-mechanical processing is required to control the process-induced deformation. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the deformation and thermal stress generation in hull structures (panels/stiffened plates) during thermo-mechanical processes such as welding. A finite element modeling approach was proposed while incorporating the thermal and nonlinear thermo-elastic-plastic material behavior. The thin panels with different geometrical configurations and boundary conditions were simulated using steady state and transient heat-transfer-stress deformations analysis to simulate real-life scenarios. Both modeling approaches give a useful insight into understanding the complex nature of deformation and built-up residual stresses. However, the transient heat transfer-stress deformation analysis results were found in a reasonably good agreement with experimental data.
