Strengthening climate resilience through an approach based on care, cultural rights, and social innovation: case of the communities of the Kerkennah islands

    No full text
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how, in the face of systemic challenges posed by climate change, triangulating the contributions of theoretical approaches based on care, cultural rights, and circular social innovation should enable a response to urgent territorial resilience challenges. Preliminary results from ongoing action-research on the Kerkennah Islands (which show strong symptoms of emblematic contemporary crises) suggest that reconnecting with mutual care practices and endogenous knowledge could constitute essential levers to rethink community regeneration and development strategies founded on local and participatory roots

Migration trends in Tunisia : analyzing new influences on labor markets

    No full text
This paper analyzes the determinants of migration in Tunisia from 1992 to 2023, focusing on economic dynamics, technological innovations, and climate change. It uses the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method to assess how these factors impact employment and wages. Findings indicate that high unemployment and limited opportunities drive emigration, leading to brain drain and labor market imbalances. However, diaspora financial transfers support the national economy. The study emphasizes the need for a national strategy to manage emigration effectively, maximizing its benefits while addressing its adverse effects on the labor market

Transboundary sustainable cultural tourism: a comparative analysis of potential and challenges between souk Ahras (Algeria) and El Kef (Tunisia)

    No full text
Cultural tourism drives local development, especially in culturally rich regions like Soukahras (Algeria) and El Kef (Tunisia). These areas possess vast historical and cultural heritage, offering strong potential for sustainable ecotourism that benefits both the environment and local communities. By protecting natural and cultural resources, they can attract visitors seeking authentic experiences. This study analyzes current sustainable tourism practices, highlights successful strategies, and proposes practical solutions for sector growth while ensuring that local populations gain fair economic and social benefits through a balanced, community-centered tourism model

Artificial intelligence and the green economy: Towards an excellent and innovative solution to ensure sustainable animal feeding (concrete application on a farm in Beja, Tunisia)

    No full text
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) can accelerate the green economy in terms of reducing costs and wasting natural resources. Our research examined and verified this effect. Food waste is one of the main problems facing dairy farmers and livestock producers. There are two reasons for this problem: cows do not have the exact nutritional needs due to variations in quantity and quality from one cow to another, and due to the gestation cycle. The project used the Scrum methodology, an innovative AI tool, to address a need expressed by livestock producers in the region, where an automated breeding unit made it possible to dose the appropriate quantity and type of feed for each cow. The work is carried out in an innovation laboratory, with dynamic specifications expressed by the product owner, the farmer. Our application has shown that AI can be considered a sustainable and excellent solution in the animal feed supply process

Sustainable Excellence : Economic, Social, and Environmental Issues

    No full text
Selected Contributions: Sustainable Excellence—Economic, Social, and Environmental Issues presents a curated collection of peer-reviewed research papers presented at the 2nd Tunisian Symposium on Economics and Management (TSEM 2025), held in Tunisia from April 11 to 13, 2025. The symposium was organised by the Research Unit "Economy, Enterprise, Environment" (3E) at the Higher Institute of Management (ISG), University of Gabes. This volume offers a multidisciplinary and innovative examination of the factors underpinning sustainable excellence amid contemporary global challenges. The contributions are organised around five core themes: first, the role of innovation as a critical driver of ecological transition; second, the transformation of labour markets and accompanying social dynamics necessary for a just transition; third, the design and evaluation of sustainable economic models; fourth, the synergistic effects of artificial intelligence (AI) and financial inclusion on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and fifth, the significance of responsible managerial practices grounded in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethical governance. Collectively, these contributions provide rigorous, timely insights into the interdependencies among economic, social, and environmental systems. This volume serves as an essential reference for academics, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the field

A socio-political approach to climate change : revisiting the social contract through the lens of common good economics

    No full text
This paper explores the necessity of redefining the Social Contract in the face of contemporary global challenges, particularly climate change and sustainability. Drawing on classical political theory—from Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Rawls to the moral philosophy of Adam Smith—we propose a renewed agreement that aligns governance, economic systems, and societal values with the imperatives of planetary health and the common good. By analyzing sustainability as a transition from ethical aspiration to financially viable practice, this paper emphasizes systemic approaches, transformative production models, and collaborative frameworks to forge a resilient and just future

Foreign ownership and total factors productivity in developing economies: some insights in Tunisia

    No full text
This paper aims at exploring the evolution of total factor productivity and its drivers based on Tunisian manufacturing firms during the 1997- 2007 period by using panel data methods. We find that large firms are more productive than small ones, totally exporting firms are more productive than partially exporting firms, the productivity of majority foreign-owned and fully foreign-controlled firms are higher than minority foreign-owned and majority foreign-owned ones respectively. Likewise, the relationship between productivity and trade variables is not very significant. Therefore, policy-makers should encourage and further liberalize foreign participation, encourage the creation of large projects, and support small ones

Sustainable development in a global context: Interactions and mutual readings between America and the Middle East (2004-2024)

    No full text
Global interdependence increasingly shapes regional development. This study examines how globalization and economic integration influenced sustainability trajectories in the Americas and the Middle East from 2004 to 2024. Using the SEY (Social–Environmental–Yield) model, which integrates simultaneous equations, a vector autoregressive (VAR) framework, and Granger causality analysis, the study measures cross-regional spillover effects. Results show predominantly positive sustainability elasticities, highlighting synergistic relationships that promote mutual learning and convergence toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The findings demonstrate that openness and cooperation are key not only for economic growth but also for social equity, energy security, and environmental resilience

Lean Management originating in the Japanese automotive sector has become a key strategy for continuous improvement and efficiency across industries. In the context of Sustainable Human Resource Management (SHRM), it aligns operational performance with long-term human capital development. Lean principles such as just-in-time, employee empowerment, Kaizen, Gemba, and value stream mapping enhance both productivity and employee engagement. This study explores the application of these tools within Tunisia’s Industry 4.0 framework, examining their impact on employee motivation and commitment. Results show that Lean practices not only improve efficiency but also foster participative and health-promoting work environments. When applied with a focus on employee involvement and development, Lean Management supports both organizational performance and social sustainability. The study highlights the importance of embedding Lean tools into organizational culture, emphasizing a balanced approach that values operational excellence alongside employee well-being. It contributes to understanding Lean as a strategic driver for sustainable performance in dynamic business environments

Drivers of electricity production and energy transition in Africa : evidence from a panel data econometric model

    No full text
Access to reliable electricity remains a pressing challenge across Africa, where population growth and development ambitions intensify energy needs. This study explores the structural drivers of electricity production across 41 African countries over the period 2000–2022, focusing on the interplay between economic performance, demographic trends, energy demand, and the evolving energy mix. Employing a log-log panel data econometric model with random effects, we estimate the elasticities of key determinants. The analysis reveals that electricity demand is the dominant factor influencing production, while renewable energy, though still emerging, now exhibits a slightly stronger impact than fossil fuels. These findings highlight both the opportunities and constraints facing Africa’s energy transition and provide evidence-based insights to guide policymakers toward more resilient, demand-driven, and sustainable electricity strategies
