Pacific Attitudes Survey: Vanuatu
Popular political attitudes surveys have been conducted globally for several decades, but the Pacific region remains an exception. The Pacific Attitudes Survey (PAS) gauges the views of ordinary citizens on a range of questions related to democracy, economics, governance, tradition, climate change, social media and international relations.
This dataset showcases a national representative sample of ni-Vanuatu of voting-age (n=1330) conducted in Vanuatu from August-October 2023. <br
Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and Smartphone Addiction: Parent Education and Behaviour Management Feasibility Trial Case Series
There is a paucity of research into parent management strategies for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and smartphone addiction, particularly delivered as a flexible online program. The aim of the current study was to examine the efficacy of an online parent management intervention for managing child IGD. A total of N=218 Year 4-8 parents were invited to participate after their child was identified with clinical levels of IGD and/or smartphone addiction. A majority (85%) of parents were classified as “non-starters” after not responding or declining the invitation, and a further 83% of parents who started the program “dropped out”. The results of a case series (n=5) are described in detail, providing qualitative evidence for the use of parent management interventions to reduce IGD, smartphone addiction and associated developmental impacts. The findings have impacts on the optimal design of future research into parent management for IGD and screen disorders, and the challenges around low retention rates in parent samples
Australian Social Survey International-ESS 2024 (AUSSI-ESS)
The European Social Survey (ESS) is an academically driven cross-national survey that has been conducted across Europe since its establishment in 2001. Every two years, face-to-face interviews are conducted with newly selected, cross-sectional samples. The survey measures the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour patterns of diverse populations in more than thirty nations.
The Australian National University (ANU) conducted the ESS in an Australian context, with data collection undertaken by the Social Research Centre’s probability-based panel, Life in Australia™. This will allow cross-continent comparisons to the European countries that participate to better understand the similarities and differences between countries

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and Smartphone Addiction: Parent Clinical Treatment Trial
There is a lack of clinical treatment trials focusing on parent management strategies for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and smartphone addiction. The aim of the current study was to examine the efficacy of the online parent management videos in reducing IGD and smartphone addiction symptoms and associated developmental impacts. A total of N=689 parent participants (with school aged children) completed baseline measures, of which 59.9% had a child with clinical levels of IGD and/or smartphone addiction. The results analysed at 6-week follow up found 60% treatment success for IGD and 32% for Smartphone addiction (non-clinical at follow-up). Increased levels of dosage and compliance with the program was statistically significant in reducing IGD and smartphone addiction, particularly for the clinical sample. Increased levels of dosage and compliance was also correlated with significant reduction in overall developmental impact, and sub-domains of physical/social development and education. These findings have implications for utilising online parent management strategies for prevention and treatment of both IGD and smartphone addiction either as a stand-alone intervention or in conjunction with established individual treatments like CBT

Being Chinese in Australia 2021 release
More than 1.2 million people of Chinese heritage live in Australia today. Their experiences are as diverse as their views; many were born in Australia, with lineages that span generations of Australian history. Others have migrated more recently from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Chinese-Australian communities have flourished and contributed to many aspects of Australian life.
The Lowy Institute’s Multiculturalism, Identity and Influence Project conducted its first nationally representative poll of Chinese-Australians at the end of 2020. Respondents were asked about their perspectives on life in Australia, and views on a wide range of issues — from foreign influence and relationships with China, to systems of government and pride in Australian life and culture. There is both continuity and divergence when these sentiments are compared to the broader Australian population, and the views of those of other diaspora communities

Discrete Choice Experiment 1: Labour Market Preferences
This dataset presents the results from a survey administered to 309 workers retrenched from the Australian automotive industry during the industry's closures. The survey was conducted between December 2021 and February 2022 and explored workers' labour market preferences, focusing on non-pecuniary job attributes. Respondents, who previously worked in roles marked for redundancy, were asked about their employment attitudes, perceptions of training programs, and preferences for job attributes such as autonomy, skill utilisation, supervision responsibilities, and employer reputation.
Participants engaged in stated preference experiments, choosing between hypothetical jobs that varied across attributes like contract type, autonomy, and skill utilisation. The sample, reflecting a representative distribution of demographics from the 2016 Census, included both original equipment manufacturers and supply chain workers. This design provides insights into the labour market preferences of retrenched automotive workers, enhancing understanding of how job quality and meaningful work influence re-employment decisions
Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and Smartphone Addiction in Australian primary school and secondary school children: Prevalence and developmental impacts
There is a notable paucity of research that has evaluated Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and smartphone addiction prevalence rates in children following the COVID-19 pandemic, including in Australian school-aged samples. The aim of the current study was to examine the prevalence and developmental impacts of IGD and smartphone addiction in children using a self-report survey design. A total of N=1993 Year 4-8 students completed the study. Medium to high smartphone addiction was found in 9.9% of the sample, whilst 4% of children met clinical (1.2%) or sub-clinical (2.7%) levels of IGD, with no differences across age ranges. A pattern of increasing developmental impacts for smartphone addiction and IGD was found. The greatest impacts on addiction and IGD were on emotional development and physical health development. These findings have implications for the increasing need for parent education, access to treatment services, and a focus on early intervention programs in primary school
