CYBER-ISLAMIC MODERATION IN INDONESIA: Digital Activism of Islami.co and IBTimes.id and Its Implications for Young Muslims

The digital sphere in Indonesia has evolved into a contested domain for divergent religious ideologies, particularly between radical and moderate interpretations of Islam. Over recent decades, religious radicalism has predominantly shaped the online narrative. However, the emergence of digital activism among younger generations affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah has led to strategic attempts at counter-narratives that emphasize religious moderation. This study investigates the role of two influential Islamic digital platforms—Islami.co and IBTimes.id—in promoting moderate Islamic discourse and shaping the religious perceptions of young Indonesian Muslims. Utilizing a mixed-methods and netnographic approach, the research integrates survey data collected from 110 university students in East Java with in-depth interviews conducted with media activists and selected platform users. The findings indicate that Islami.co and IBTimes.id are actively involved in constructing and disseminating narratives that promote Islamic moderation through curated content, strategic communication, and mission-driven digital activism. This role positions them as ideological counterbalances to radical religious narratives. The study concludes that digital media serves as a crucial platform for contemporary religious discourse and significantly influences the Islamic worldview of Indonesian Muslim youth, highlighting the importance of digital activism in promoting moderate religious values

RELIGIOUS DRAMA CONTROVERSY: The Impact of Bidaah on Islamic Pedagogy and Media Literacy

This study explores audience reception of the Malaysian drama Bidaah through the perspectives of pedagogy and media literacy, focusing on how cinematic depictions of religious manipulation shape perceptions in Malaysia and Indonesia. Using a descriptive-exploratory qualitative method supported by quantitative data, the research analyzed social media discourse, surveyed 100 respondents, and interviewed 20 Islamic educators from both countries. Findings show divided responses: Indonesian audiences tended to value the film’s artistic critique of spiritual abuse, while most educators expressed concern about its potential to distort views of Islamic leadership. Thematic analysis highlights issues of charismatic dominance, symbolic language, and emotional religious rhetoric in media. The study argues that educators should move beyond binary judgments and instead foster critical, ethical media engagement. Bidaah thus becomes not only a cinematic controversy but also a pedagogical opportunity to nurture discernment, compassion, and media-literate faith

THE CONTRIBUTION OF INDONESIAN HADȊTS SCHOLAR MAHFÛZ AL-TERMASI ON TSABAT: A Study of Kifayat al-Mustafid

    No full text
The hadîts tradition places great emphasis on the precise transmission of reports from reliable sources, with authenticity hinging on the integrity of each link in the chain of transmission (isnâd). This concern for accuracy led narrators to study under authoritative scholars, as the reliability of a hadîts depends significantly on the credibility of its transmitters. Following the compilation of hadîts into canonical texts, students actively pursued learning from recognized teachers, often documenting their scholarly lineages and texts studied in tsabat manuscripts. Many traveled to major centers of Islamic learning, such as the Haramain, where scholars from across the Muslim world gathered. This study examines the contributions of Indonesian hadîts scholars to the tsabat tradition through an analysis of manuscripts by Yasin al-Fadani, Mukhtar 'Atarid al-Bughuri, and Mahfuz al-Termasi. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, it investigates their methods of documentation and transmission. The findings reveal that Indonesian scholars played a vital role in preserving hadîts transmission chains, demonstrating scholarly rigor on par with their Middle Eastern contemporaries. Mahfuz al-Termasi’s Kifâyat al-Mustafîd, in particular, exemplifies meticulous sanad recording. This study underscores the importance of tsabat as a marker of scholarly authenticity and calls for the digitization of such manuscripts to safeuard Islamic intellectual heritage

IMPLEMENTING TAZKIYAH AL-NAFS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT CHARACTER

Contemporary character education often lacks integration with spiritually rooted frameworks, particularly those grounded in Islamic traditions of inner purification. Despite the richness of concepts such as tazkiyah al-nafs, their practical application in modern educational settings remains limited. This study explores the concept of tazkiyah al-nafs as articulated by Abū Hasan Al-Nadwī and its relevance to contemporary character education. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, the research examines primary texts and scholarly interpretations to assess its pedagogical potential. The findings indicate that Al-Nadwī’s formulation—though distinct in its technical articulation—aligns with other scholars in four key aspects: its foundation in Qur’anic and Prophetic teachings, its position as an alternative to philosophical Sufism, its emphasis on ethical-spiritual purification through worship and social conduct, and its role in developing inner discipline. The study proposes a model for integrating tazkiyah al-nafs into character education through curriculum design, institutional culture, and a spiritually conscious learning environment

THE LIVING TRADITION OF “BAY’AH LIMA”: Sustaining Sheikh Musthafa Husein al Mandily’s Teachings in Shaping Santri Nationalism

This paper examines the living tradition of Bay’ah Lima, rooted in the teachings of Sheikh Musthafa Husein al-Mandily, with particular attention to its historical development and transformation. Using a qualitative-historical approach and drawing on Eric Hobsbawm’s theory of Invented Tradition, the study highlights three key findings: first, Bay’ah Lima emphasizes loyalty to both religion and the nation; second, while the formal practice of oath-taking is no longer observed in Pesantren Musthafawiyah, it has evolved into forms more relevant to contemporary contexts; and third, its values remain embedded in classroom teaching, pesantren activities, and national commemorations. These findings illustrate that traditions may shift in form while retaining their essence. The study underscores the role of pesantren as a vital force in shaping Indonesian nationalism, countering assumptions that Islamic education fosters anti-nationalist sentiment, and recommends that pesantren continuously contextualize their practices to sustain both religious and national consciousness.

RELIGIOUS PLURALISM IN MUSLIM-MAJORITY COUNTRIES: Comparing Gorontalo, Indonesia and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia

Indonesia and Malaysia, as Muslim-majority nations, are recognized for their tolerance of other religious groups. However, this study highlights underlying challenges threatening social stability in both countries. Focusing on Gorontalo, Indonesia, and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, the research examines the dynamics of religious pluralism and its societal challenges. Using a qualitative approach, main data were gathered through interviews with interfaith leaders, teachers, activists, and officials. The findings reveal that, while harmony and interfaith dialogue exist, challenges persist. In Gorontalo, minority communities face difficulties in constructing places of worship and acquiring suitable religious teachers. In Negeri Sembilan tensions arise over proper use of “religious plurality” or “pluralism” and the use of the term “Allah” by the Christians. Apparently, on top of the existing efforts other creative ways need to be used to strengthen religious harmony catering for the ever evolving social complexities in both regions

PESANTREN IN DYNAMIC TRANSFORMATION: Harmonizing Classical Roots and Modern Practices

Caught between the pull of tradition and the push of modernity, pesantren is undergoing a crucial transformation in the landscape of Indonesian Islamic education. This study explores how pesantrens maintain their classical roots while integrating modern educational practices. It employs a narrative review with data collected from relevant peer-reviewed literature. These data are synthesized according to common themes and analyzed qualitatively. The review reveals that, despite external pressures (e.g., colonial rule and state policies) and its active role in civil society, pesantren continues to preserve traditional Islam by sustaining classical Islamic scholarship, moral teachings, and kyai-led authority. At the same time, modernization has strongly influenced pesantren education, with many institutions expanding their curricula, adopting inclusive governance, utilizing digital tools, and aligning with national education policies to strengthen institutional capacity and relevance. These pesantrens demonstrate a careful balancing act; they selectively integrate modern educational reforms while upholding their religious traditions although certain issues still merit further attention. Overall, these findings underscore the pesantren’s resilience, adaptability, and significance in today’s Indonesian educational context

THE LOCAL WISDOM OF INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES, RELIGIOUS LEADERS, AND INTELLECTUALS IN MITIGATING THE SOCIAL IMPACTS OF ILLEGAL GOLD MINING IN WEST PASAMAN, WEST SUMATRA

This study explores the role of indigenous, religious, and intellectual institutions in mitigating the social impacts of illegal gold mining on communities in West Pasaman, West Sumatra. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through interviews and observations involving ten key informants. Data analysis was conducted using the framework proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that illegal gold mining has led to significant social consequences, including social conflict, economic disparities, moral degradation, and the proliferation of drug and alcohol abuse. These pressing issues have garnered serious attention from Tigo Tungku Sajarangan, a traditional leadership structure, which collaborates with the Nagari Customary Court to address these challenges. This collaboration involves various stakeholders, including nagari leaders, the Nagari Traditional Council, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of West Pasaman, local Islamic preachers, as well as members of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama. Additionally, non-governmental organizations and diaspora communities also play an active role in these efforts. The initiatives undertaken through this collaboration include moral appeals, public awareness campaigns, and the imposition of customary sanctions. However, customary institutions lack the legal authority to prosecute criminal offenses, limiting their ability to enforce legal consequences. Nonetheless, their efforts contribute significantly to fostering social harmony and strengthening community resilience against the adverse effects of illegal gold mining. Keywords: Society, Impact, Illegal Gold Mining, Tigo Tungku Sajaranga

INTEGRATION OF KNOWLEDGE: Comparison of Experiences in Malaysian and Indonesian Universities

Efforts to integrate science and revelation in Islamic campuses have been underway since the 1970s; however, the extent to which these aspirations have been achieved still requires further discussion. This study examines how the integration of knowledge is manifested at USIM and UIN SU Medan. The focus is on the theoretical-philosophical framework, objectives, implementation processes, strategic priorities, and challenges of science integration. The research primarily relies on written data from guidebooks and reports on science integration at both campuses, analyzed using Content Analysis. The study found that both campuses share similarities in terms of philosophy and theory of integration, despite using different terminologies and jargons. They also face relatively similar challenges. On the other hand, there are significant differences between the two campuses in terms of governance and clarity of work plans. As an experience, the findings of this study can contribute to similar efforts at other campuses.

ISLAMIC HIERARCHY OF VALUE: Abdullah Saeed’s progressive interpretation of the Qur’an

The interpretation of the Qur'an often neglects sociological disparities, despite its inherent social dimensions. This study examines Abdullah Saeed's progressive interpretation of the Qur'an, focusing on his concept of the Islamic hierarchy of values as a framework for recontextualizing ethical-legal injunctions in modernity. Employing a descriptive-qualitative method with a hermeneutic and socio-historical approach, this research traces the epistemological foundations of Saeed’s contextual exegesis and its implications for contemporary Qur’anic scholarship. Saeed argues that ethical-legal verses must be reinterpreted in light of evolving social realities, emphasizing a dynamic hierarchy of values that prioritizes the Qur'an's overarching moral objectives over rigid textual literalism. Influenced by Fazlur Rahman’s double-movement hermeneutics, Saeed systematically develops an interpretive model that distinguishes between timeless universal principles and time-bound rulings. His approach advocates for a shift from textualist to contextual methodologies, ensuring the Qur'an’s relevance to modern challenges. This study concludes that Saeed’s hierarchy of values offers a transformative framework for progressive Qur’anic interpretation, balancing fidelity to the text with responsiveness to societal change, thereby enriching contemporary Islamic thought
