Long-Distance Parenting and Family Resilience Strategies of Indonesian Migrant Workers in Taiwan

    No full text
This study examines the resilience of Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI) families in Taiwan and the strategies they apply in long-distance parenting. Using Henry’s family resilience model, it analyzes family risks, vulnerabilities, protection, adaptation, and socio-ecological factors. Data were collected through interviews with 25 PMIs in Taiwan, 25 left-behind children and 25 caregivers in Indonesia. The findings show that migration-related family risks are rooted in structural poverty, gendered labor regimes, and marital disruption, while vulnerability is shaped by low educational attainment, weak communication, and limited caregiving capacity. Religion emerges as a crucial protective resource in transnational family life. Beyond emotional coping, religious values provide moral guidance, sustain parental authority, shape caregiving practices, and support meaning-making across distance through practices such as religious instruction, pesantren-based (Islamic Boarding) care, and faith-informed role modeling. Family adaptation depends not only on individual agency but also on socio-ecological support, including faith-based organizations and migrant networks. The study extends family resilience theory by demonstrating how religion strengthens resilience processes in transnational families and highlights the importance of culturally grounded interventions for migrant family welfare

Code-Switching and Code-Mixing in the Film Assal Eswed: A Sociolinguistic Study

    No full text
This study investigates bilingual practices in contemporary Arab society by examining code-switching and code-mixing in the film Assal Eswed, directed by Khalid Marei. The study aims to identify the types and linguistic forms of code-switching and code-mixing, as well as the sociolinguistic factors influencing their occurrence. Employing a descriptive-analytical method within a sociolinguistic framework, the data consist of characters’ utterances collected through observation, transcription, and classification. The analysis is based on the theories of code-switching and code-mixing proposed by Suwito and Chaer, the code-switching factors outlined by Hoffmann and Saville-Troike, and the code-mixing factors proposed by Suwito and Suwandi. The findings reveal that all instances of code-switching are external, predominantly involving shifts from Arabic to English, while code-mixing occurs in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. The influencing factors include role identification, register adjustment, explanatory needs, shared mother tongue, lexical gaps, and habitual speech patterns. These findings indicate that Assal Eswed reflects the interaction between language, identity, and globalization in a bilingual Egyptian context, highlighting film as a relevant medium for sociolinguistic analysis and contributing a foundation for broader investigations of language contact, identity, and bilingualism in Arabic media

An Analysis on Speech Acts in Guy de Maupassant’s Short Story “The Necklace”

    No full text
This study aims to identify and briefly explain the types of speech acts found in the utterances of Guy de Maupassant’s short story “The Necklace.” Using Yule’s speech act theory, 51 utterances were analyzed and classified into representative (22), directive (25), expressive (8), commissive (2), and no declarative speech acts. The classification was based on primary acts supported by secondary or complementary acts reflected in the narration. The findings show that directive and representative speech acts dominate the story, functioning to advance the plot and reveal characters’ experiences and beliefs. Expressive and commissive speech acts occur less frequently because emotions and commitments are mostly conveyed through narrative description rather than dialogue. The results may serve as useful material for EFL instruction, particularly in enhancing reading skill

    No full text
This study investigates the use of deixis in the character of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series Wednesday Season 1 (2022) from a pragmatic perspective. Deixis plays a crucial role in shaping meaning, character identity, and interaction within audiovisual discourse. The objective of this research is to identify the types of deixis used by Wednesday Addams and to explain how deixis reflects her personality and interpersonal relationships. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis as the research design. The data were collected from Wednesday Addams’ utterances across all episodes and analyzed using Yule’s (1996) theory of deixis, covering personal, spatial, and temporal deixis, and Miles and Huberman’s (1994) model of qualitative data analysis. The results show that personal deixis is the most dominant type with 624 occurrences, followed by temporal deixis with 139 occurrences and spatial deixis with 124 occurrences. The findings indicate that deixis significantly reflects Wednesday’s independent, emotionally detached, and dominant personality in social interactions. In conclusion, deixis functions not only as a linguistic device but also as an essential tool in constructing character identity and narrative meaning in audiovisual media. &nbsp

Addressing Academic Anxiety Among Students from Broken Families: Exploring an Islamic Counselling Approach Grounded in Javanese Indigenous Values

    No full text
Adolescents from divorced or conflict-affected families in Indonesia often experience academic anxiety rooted in emotional instability and limited family support. This challenge is especially pronounced in Javanese cultural settings, where harmony, acceptance, and spiritual balance are central to well-being. However, research on school counselling in Indonesia remain largely generic, often neglecting these cultural and spiritual dimensions that shape students’ emotional resilience. To address this gap, the present study explores the Junggringan Kawruh Jiwo (JKJ) counselling method, a culturally grounded approach that integrates Islamic spirituality and Javanese indigenous values to support students from broken families in managing academic anxiety. JKJ combines Ki Ageng Suryomentaram’s concept of kawruh jiwa (self-awareness and emotional responsibility), Islamic spiritual practices (dhikr, prayer, and reflection on Qur’anic verses), and Javanese principles (nrimo, ngalah, sabar) into a holistic therapeutic framework. Six students (aged 16-18) from divorced or conflict-affected families and three experienced school counsellors, purposively recruited through school administrations based on their prior work with such students, participated from three vocational schools in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of reflective journals (February-April 2025). Credibility was enhanced through triangulation across data sources and validation via member checking and expert consultation in Javanese cultural and counselling traditions. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and reflective journal analysis between February and April 2025. Credibility was enhanced through triangulation of data sources and verification of interpretations via member checking and expert consultation in Javanese culture and counselling practice. The findings reveal that JKJ counselling enabled students to recognise and regulate anxiety through reflective dialogue, spiritual practices, and culturally resonant exercises promoting acceptance and self-awareness. Counsellors’ empathetic engagement fostered emotional safety and trust. Collectively, these results indicate that JKJ represents a culturally responsive counselling framework with potential to enhance the psychological support available to adolescents from broken families in Indonesia

The Rift in the Donald Trump-Benjamin Netanyahu Alliance: Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough

    No full text
The rift between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu in the alliance against the Houthi group reflects ideological shifts and political and diplomatic interests in the Middle East, while also marking a change in the direction of US-Israel relations under regional geopolitical pressure. This study aims to uncover the underlying ideology, power relations, and social context reflected in media coverage of the rift between Donald Trump and Benyamin Netanyahu. It also examines their behavioral patterns during critical moments of their alliance, particularly amid the Houthi conflict. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The primary data consist of two Arabic language news articles from Al-Jazeera and two from I24 News. Data collection involved translation, close reading, and note taking, while analysis followed the stages of data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that, at the textual level, experiential, relational, and expressive values convey ideology, self-representation, and power asymmetry between Trump and Netanyahu. At the discourse practice level, Al-Jazeera utilizes intertextuality and reported speech, whereas I24 News highlights direct quotations and harmonious narratives. At the sociocultural level, global political dynamics, institutional influences, media roles, and Trump’s extreme nationalist ideology shape discourse construction. The study concludes that in critical situations, Trump is opportunistic, while Netanyahu remains cooperative, reflecting Israel’s dependence on the United States for security and political legitimacy. This study contributes to critical discourse analysis by expanding the object and focus of analysis in explaining the dynamics of the relationship and behavior patterns of the two strategic alliances between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu when in critical situations. However, because this study focuses on two media outlets, future research should involve American media and other international media to provide a more comprehensive understanding of US-Israel relations in the Middle East

    No full text
Digital technology is developing rapidly and undergoing continuous change. Instagram is used as an information center for writing about social issues through cartoon illustrations. Cartoons are a visual way to discuss social phenomena in a humorous or satirical manner. Cartoons contain visual elements that convey meaning. The purpose of this study is to uncover the meaning contained in the cartoons on Instagram @rahma_toons. The methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative, to determine the representation of @rahma_toons cartoons using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, which focuses on three trichotomy concepts. First, identifying relevant cartoons from the Instagram account and additional data from scientific literature sources. Second, presenting data grouped by icons, symbols, and indexes. Next, the results of the analysis are presented in detail. The findings show that cartoons from @rahma_toons convey social criticism of the negative impacts of digital technology through clear visual representations. This study emphasizes the importance of visual media literacy skills to understand critical messages in today's digital era. For further research, it is recommended to expand the object of study, not only on caricatures, and it is also recommended to use approaches from other semiotics, to enrich the perspective of visual meaning analysis

This study was motivated by the low motivation and negative perceptions of students towards Arabic language learning, which is still dominated by traditional methods and pays little attention to the affective aspects of students. The purpose of this study was to describe students' perceptions of the effectiveness of teaching methods in Arabic language learning at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fatahillah Semarang and to identify the factors that influence it. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach with data collection through a four-level Likert scale questionnaire administered to 20 eighth-grade students. The results showed that students' perceptions were in the good category with an average score of 2.98. The indicators of clarity of delivery, variety of methods, and student participation received the highest scores (3.08), while the relevance and contextuality of the material were still the weakest aspects (2.75). In conclusion, teachers have applied quite effective methods, but there needs to be improvement in context-based and real-life learning. Scientifically, this study contributes to strengthening Arabic pedagogy studies by emphasizing the dimensions of student perception and motivation. It is recommended that future studies use a mixed methods approach to explore in greater depth the relationship between perception, motivation, and student learning outcomes

TikTok Reading Challenge Videos in EFL Speaking Practice

    No full text
This qualitative descriptive study explores EFL students’ perceptions of using TikTok “Reading Challenge” videos as a medium for speaking practice. Although previous studies have examined TikTok as a platform for speaking activities and learner motivation, limited attention has been given to multimodal tasks that integrate reading and speaking fluency in real time. To address this gap, the present study focuses on students’ experiences with Reading Challenge videos that require reading aloud rapidly changing on-screen text. Five English Education students from Tadulako University who had independently engaged in the Reading Challenge participated in the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that the Reading Challenge promotes spontaneous engagement and motivation by providing an enjoyable and less formal space for speaking practice. It also supports the development of pronunciation and fluency through focused attention on timing, articulation, and rhythm. In addition, opportunities for repeated practice in a private setting help reduce speaking anxiety and build confidence. However, participants also reported challenges related to maintaining accuracy and comprehension when following fast-moving text. Overall, this study contributes to existing research by highlighting TikTok Reading Challenge videos as a self-directed multimodal practice that bridges reading and speaking skills within Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) context
