Experiences with Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Optimal Control Problems
Get PDFNeural networks can be used to parametrize solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs). Specifically, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have gained popularity since they do not require numerically simulated or experimental data for training. It is straightforward to use PINNs to represent not only a single PDE solution but parameter dependent families of solutions. On the other hand, PINNs are reported to experience limited accuracy as well as convergence issues during training. In this work, we give an account of our experience in using PINNs to solve a simple family of PDE-constrained optimal control problems dependent on the control cost parameter. We employ a straightforward approach by minimizing the pointwise residuals of the optimality system at random collocation points. In our experiments, we observe severe convergence problems during training, even in the fixed parameter setting, and attribute them to a bias in the multi-objective PINN training. We report on two techniques to overcome this issue: dynamic loss weights and hard-coding certain parts of the optimality system. The combination of these measures enables the PINN model to learn solutions to reasonable accuracy for individual parameter values within a range of several orders of magnitude. In an attempt to learn the entire parametric family of solutions, we increase the network size yet are unable to achieve the same accuracy as in the fixed parameter setting. This indicates that loss-weighting algorithms cannot completely overcome training bias
Multimodal Cohesion in Panel Graphs: A Pragmaticist Approach to the Gap Between Comics Grammar and Aesthetics
Get PDFDer Aufsatz präsentiert einen Peirceschen, pragmatizistischen Ansatz zur Auflösung der Spannung zwischen zwei Theorien der Comiclektüre: Einer Gruppe, die eine grundsätzlich sprachähnliche visuelle Sprache mit entsprechenden Grammatiken voraussetzt, und einer anderen Gruppe, die auf einer freien künstlerischen Interpretation besteht, die die Beziehungen in Panelsequenzen und die Sinnstiftung in der Comiclektüre begründe. Der vorgestellte Ansatz will beide Positionen bejahen und miteinander vereinbar machen, indem er erklärt, in welchen zwei verschiedenen Sinnen Comics eine Grammatik haben und nicht haben. Er untersucht die wahrgenommene Kluft zwischen der Grammatik und der Ästhetik von Comics an einem alltäglichen Beispiel aus Amazing Spider-Man. Zwar lässt sich von einem hermeneutischen Korridor zwischen regelgebundenen und heautonomen Interpretationen sprechen. Eine Historisierung dieser Position erlaubt es jedoch, andere Theoriebildungen über die so beschriebenen Kognitionen in Betracht zu ziehen. In einer Bewegung von einer grammatischen und einer hermeneutischen zu einer allgemeineren, pragmatizistisch semiotischen Konzeption der Semiosen, mit denen Ambiguitäten und Irritationen in der Comiclektüre durch Revision bearbeitet werden, geht das Argument zu einer Betrachtung dreier Kontinua im Sinne der Peirceschen Semiotik über: fortgesetzte Semiose, ‚Präszision‘ und Abstraktion, und der Übergang von einfachen zu kreativen Abduktionen. So ergeben sich drei Schlussfolgerungen für ein letztlich multimodales Modell der Kohäsionsbildung in Panelsequenzen, das die scheinbare Kluft zwischen Grammatik und Ästhetik übergreift: Erstens lässt sich die Spezifik einer r ü c k b l i c k e n d e n E i n s t e l l u n g in der Comiclektüre beschreiben, die sich zwar mit einem hermeneutischen Korridor vergleichen lässt, aber auch andere Deutungen zulässt. Zweitens lassen sich so Annahmen über die b e w u s s t e o d e r r e f l e k t i e r t e Qualität der Comiclektüre zugunsten einer umfassend technischen Beschreibung kontinuierlicher Semiose zurückstellen. Und drittens kann der historische Kontext anderer Deutungen die Ve r m i s c h u n g konzeptuell zu trennender Distinktionen zwischen Grammatik und Ästhetik, zwischen bewusster und unreflektierter Lektüre sowie zwischen Schrift und Bild zwar motivieren, kann aber heute an Bindungskraft verlieren.The essay presents a Peircean or pragmaticist approach to the contradiction between two kinds of theories about comics interpretation: One set which assumes the existence of a fundamentally lingual grammar in accordance with concepts of ‘visual languages’, and another set which insists on a free artistic interpretation as the force grounding interrelations between comics panels in sequence and sense-making in comics. The approach presented supports both positions and attempts to reconcile them by explaining in which two different senses comics do and do not have grammar. It examines the perceived gap between the grammar and the aesthetics of comics in a quotidian example taken from the pages of Amazing Spider-Man. While admitting a possible hermeneutic corridor between regular and singular, ‘heautonomous’ interpretations in the terminology of Romantic aesthetics, this position then historicizessuch accounts and looks for alternative treatments of the same cognitive processes. By moving from a grammatical through a hermeneutical to a pragmaticist semiotic account of the resolution of ambiguities and irritations in interpreting a short panel sequence, the argument pivots on the Peircean continua of continued semiosis, of the interplay of prescision and abstraction, and of the gradual differences between simple and creative abduction, to outline three distinct conclusions for a multimodal model of cohesion in panel sequences that straddles the seeming divide between grammar and aesthetics: First, that such a hermeneutic corridor can be elaborated as a specific kind of r e v i s i o n a l a t t i t u d e towards panel interpretation in sequence; second, that this allows the delegation of assumptions about conscious or reflective reading in favor of a comprehensive technical account of continuous interpretation; and third, that the historic contexts of previous interpretations have reasons to c o n f l a t e d i s t i n c t i o n s between pictorial grammar and aesthetics with distinctions between conscious and automatic reading as well as between script and pictures, but that such conflations may no longer have to hold today

Sie bekräftigt die Bedeutung des Essens für die Definition der Identität auf verschiedenen Ebenen, von der eines ganzen Volkes bis hin zu einzelnen Familien oder sogar Individuen, und damit den unmittelbaren rituellen Wert, den jeder Aspekt der Ernährung hat. Es geht nicht nur darum, zu behaupten, dass das Essen an sich von etwas anderem spricht, dass die Gastronomie zum Träger von Bedeutungen wird, die über sie hinausgehen und nichts mit ihrer Ernährungsfunktion zu tun haben, sondern darum, ihren systematischen Charakter aufzuzeigen. Die Beziehung zwischen Essen und Sprache kann, wenn man es genau nimmt, auf zwei verschiedene Arten verstanden werden. Es gibt die Diskurse, die das Essen zum Gegenstand haben, die Diskurse über das Essen, aber auch die Diskurse über das Essen, die das Essen als Ausdrucksmittel benutzen, um etwas Bestimmtes zu bezeichnen. Aber es reicht nicht aus zu sagen, dass Brot in einer bestimmten Tradition etwas bedeutet, um es semiotisch relevant zu machen, sondern es muss argumentiert werden, dass Brot in der Lage ist, eine breite Palette von Konzepten zu artikulieren. Diese Möglichkeit wird in der Lebensmittelsemiotik untersucht.“Good to think with.” The potential of a semiotics of food, as well as its cultural value, is perfectly expressed by this famous statement from Claude Lévi-Strauss. It affirms the importance of food in defining identity on various levels, from entire peoples to individual families or even individuals, and thus emphasises the immediate ritual value that every aspect of nutrition assumes. It is not merely a matter of stating that food inherently conveys something else, that gastronomy becomes the carrier of meanings that go beyond it and have no connection to its nutritional function, but rather of demonstrating its systematic nature. The relationship between food and language, upon careful consideration, can be understood in two different ways: there are discourses that have food as their object, the discourses on food, as well as those of food that employ food as an expressive medium to signify something specific. However, it is not sufficient to claim that bread signifies something in a certain tradition to make it semiotically relevant; one must argue that bread is capable of articulating a broad range of concepts. Atommüll und Langzeitkommunikation: Entwürfe und Debatten seit 1984
Get PDFDer Beitrag stellt zentrale Debatten über Atommüll und Langzeitkommunikationen vor, die ab Mitte der 1980er Jahre geführt worden sind. Nach kurzen Bemerkungen zum aktuellen Stand der Endlagerung hochradioaktiver nuklearer Reststoffe und einem ebenso kurzen Überblick über die wichtigsten Etappen der hier nachgezeichneten Diskussionen geht der Text zwei prinzipiellen Fragen nach: Ist eine langfristige Kommunikation über die künftig zu errichtenden Endlager überhaupt erstrebenswert? Und wenn das der Fall ist: Wie ist sie möglich? Mit der Planung von Endlagerung befasste Institutionen wie das US-amerikanische Department of Energy wie auch die Nuclear Energy Agency der OECD haben die erste Frage immer wieder bejaht und sich für Antworten auf die zweite an einen in den letzten Jahrzehnten deutlich gewachsenen Kreis von wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen und Künsten gewandt. Mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit für die dabei beobachtbare Verlagerung der theoretischen, methodischen und disziplinären Schwerpunkte betrachtet der hier folgende Beitrag Vorschlägefür Zeichen und Zeichenträger, für Botschaften und ihre erwarteten Rezeptionen, Entwürfe von Institutionen, die eventuelle Zeichen, Botschaften und Endlager begleiten und sichern könnten, sowie Ideen zu Formen, mit denen das Erinnern an eventuelle Endlager gleich jetzt und weltweit in Gang kommen soll.The article presents central debates on nuclear waste and long-term communications originating in the early considerations of the 1980s. After brief remarks on the current state of the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste and after an equally brief overview of the most important stages of the discussions on long-term communications, the paper explores two fundamental questions: Is long-term communication accompanying the prospective repositories desirable at all? And if that\u27s the case, how is it possible? Institutions involved in the planning of final disposal sites, such as the US Department of Energy and the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD, have repeatedly answered the first question in the affirmative and turned to a number of scientific disciplines and arts that has grown significantly in recent decades for answers to the second. With particular attention to the observable shifts of theoretical, methodological and disciplinary focal points, the following article considers proposed signs and sign carriers, messages and their expected receptions, designs for institutions that might accompany and secure possible signs, messages and repositories, and finally, ideas for practices of their remembrance designed to be set in motion right now and around the world

Semiotics of Law
Get PDFIn diesem Beitrag soll die Relevanz eines ethnosemiotischen Ansatzes für das Recht erörtert werden, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die spezifische Problematik des Wohnungseigentums. Der Beitrag gliedert sich daher in vier Abschnitte. Der erste Teil führt in den theoretisch-disziplinären Kontext der semiotischen Studien bezogen auf das Recht ein, der verschiedene Ansätze in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten in den Bereichen Pragmatik, Soziolinguistik, Rechtsanthropologie und Rechtsgeographie umfasst. Im zweiten Abschnitt werden einige dieser Ansätze mit der Greimas’schen Semiotik verknüpft, indem auf die Knotenpunkte der Untersuchungen von Algirdas Greimas, Bernard Jackson und Eric Landowski im Bereich des Rechts zurückgegriffen wird. Der dritte Abschnitt stellt die wichtigsten Aspekte eines ethnosemiotischen Ansatzes vor und konzentriert sich auf die Frage, ob Recht und soziale Normen als untrennbar miteinander verwoben betrachtet werden können. Der vierte und letzte Abschnitt schließlich basiert auf einer Analyse der Fallstudie der Eigentumswohnung aus einer ethnosemiotischen Perspektive. Trotz der zahlreichen Fragen, die sichin Bezug auf den Raum, die anthropologischen Gewohnheiten, die architektonischen Stile und das Recht stellen, ermöglicht es der ethnosemiotische Ansatz, eine strukturelle Kohärenz des Wohnhauses im Sinne einer semiotischen Lebensform aufzuzeigen.In this contribution we aim at discussing the relevance of an ethnosemiotic approach to law, namely for the specific issues of the block of flats as an object. The chapter is hence structured in four sections. In the first one the theoretical disciplinary context of semiotic studies on law is introduced, encompassing various approaches across Europe and the United States, in the fields of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, legal anthropology and legal geography. The second section links some of these approaches to Greimasian semiotics, going back to the crucial outcomes of Algirdas Greimas, Bernard Jackson and Eric Landowski’s investigation in the field of law. The third section presents the main aspects of an ethnosemiotic approach, and focuses on the matter of considering law and social norms as inextricably interlaced. The fourth and last section therefore comes to analyse the case study of block of flats in an ethnosemiotic perspective. Despite the existence of many issues involved, such as space, anthropological habits, architectural styles, and the law, the approach of ethnosemiotics makes it possible to display a structural coherence of block of flats in terms of a semiotic form of life
